Anytime we intervene from the air in a conflict, it's the beginning of the end for the opposing side. Those who control the sky control the outcome of the war and the USA has the world's largest air force.

This doesn't even include the missile command, which controls part of the USA's nuclear deterrent.

It's the X-15, a rocket plane from the late 1950s. It's the longtime record holder for fastest aircraft (Mach 6.72) and regularly exceeded 50 mile altitudes, qualifying most of its pilots as astronauts.

Nothing really, it was purely experimental for research purposes. Boeing's scramjet is the only thing that fast but it is unmanned and not rocket powered.
