For example instead of building a 200+ mph bullet train, first get at least a US version of the interCity 125 on some of the routes. The first one that springs to mind is the acela which despite having a top speed of 150 mph only averages around 80, so first thing first would upgrade the track so it at least breaks into the triple digits.
Then the next step would be upgrading amtraks"higher-speed routes" so there at least 30 mins to 1 hour faster than driving which would include:
The Lincoln Service from Chicago to St. Louis (which probably would be the easiest since a good chunk of it already allows for speeds of 110 mph)
The Empire Service from New York City to Albany
The Keystone from Philadelphia to Harrisburg
The Blue water from Chicago to Port Huron
And the Pacific Surfliner from Los Angeles to San Diego
