Yup, took a considerable amount of effort to get it unstuck. They had to pour a circle of tightly spaced concrete piles to create a hole though which they could pull off and replace the cutter head.

I will until Teslas pay an electric vehicle fee for the damage they do to roads but don't pay for. We need a damage tax for the amount of destruction electric vehicles do to our roads. Fortunately some of my local lawmakers are working on something just like this.

That's a proxy for miles traveled and size of vehicle.

Then let's do away with gas tax (above sales tax rates), license tab fees, etc. We can't flip-flop between these things do/don't pay for roads based on the expediency of our political arguments.

In all seriousness though, there were plenty such yells going on for at least an hour after the breakthrough, I think. I missed the exact moment when it actually happened, but no doubt there was plenty going on then as well.

By the time they are done with their job they would probably require an overhaul akin to rebuilding the entire thing. With tight budgets and deadlines on billion dollar projects the choice to go with a brand new machine helps reduce risk of costly delays.

There are also other situations where the position of the tunnel end makes it costly to try removing the TBM rather than just having it bury itself a little further away.

I'm my state the gas tax is instead of the sales tax. It's basically just a very slightly higher sales tax earmarked for roads.

Cars do little damage when compared to a semi truck that is around 20x the weight when fully loaded. If anyone should be paying a damage tax, it should be trucking companies.

Though it should be noted that on average, electric cars are heavier than regular gas cars because of the weight of the batteries.

The article I read said that the cutter head would likely be sold for scrap and melted down, but a lot of the internals (scaffolding, conveyors, electric motors, ring handling machinery, etc.) can be pulled out and resold. The main problem is that the cutting head needs to be cut into about 8 pieces just to get it out via city streets.

I drive a BMW and for every mile I damage and consume roads I pay for it via a gas tax.

A Tesla does the same damage every mile but doesn't pay that gas tax. They're free loaders.

Don't get my started on cyclists. Don't think they damage roads? You'd be dead wrong bud.

Other taxes pay for roads more than gasoline taxes. Gasoline taxes pay a fraction of the upkeep of roads, and more significantly, freeways, which bicycles don't use. Lets not forget all that prime land used for free street parking.

Teslas are free loaders, cars are subsidized.

The tunnel was a mistake. I said from the beginning that they should have done street level, or a Viaduct replacement. Who the fuck builds a highway tunnel next to an ocean?
