They were a good way to patrol/guard important infrastructure (railroad) with heavy weaponry when the alternative was to walk or load everything onto horses.

Is train driving a good career? Do you get paid quite a bit for doing it and is it fun?

The idea isn't to use a train as a weapons platform per se. But trains already have to run for logistical purposes. And that makes them targets. So add defensive weapons (mainly AA) to protect them.
