The degree of his injury is unfortunate, but not that surprising considering the man's age and the fact that they had to forcibly extract him from a close quarters space like an airline seat. It's not like they roughed him up to subdue him before dragging him out.
The officers told Dao that they'd have to drag him out if he continued to refuse, and he literally said "Well, you can drag me" and that he'd "rather go to jail".
A more sensible individual would have realized at some point along the way there wasn't anything he could do to stay on the flight, and left under his own power well before the airport police saw fit to drag his ass off the plane.

What you're defending isn't some noble act of civil disobedience, it was essentially an adult temper tantrum. It also still didn't get him his flight home, and ultimately contributed to a two-hour delay for everyone else on the plane.
