I read this story of a bike store sales dude that got an order from the Marine base near him for 24 bikes for their recreation purposes. So marines could use a mountain bike for fun in their offtime on base.
The marines bought 14 cannondales that cost 8k each and 10 that cost 10k each. Just so Marines could fuck around on for the occasional fun. I'm sure they all wound up busted after 2 weeks.
Tax dollars...

Most military bases have an outdoor rec shop. They rent the bikes out and charge for damages on return. There's either a mechanic on staff or they contract a local one out to maintain them.

I volunteered for a while at one of them after hours in Korea because their contract expired and the fleet of pretty decent Specialized FS mtn and road bikes were falling apart.

Those base services are required to net a profit. Either they rented them enough to break even on the bikes or something else they do subsidizes it. The wood shop at the base I'm at now in Italy had $50K of equipment dumped into it recently because the auto shop had excess money from doing more oil changes and alignments than they expected one year.

Those tyres are long gone now. Once I wear current ones, I'll switch to a pair of CX tyres.

I also intend to lower the BB by machining a new suspension link and limiting travel to approx 60mm.

New suspension link will give me bearings instead of DU bushings, lower suspension ratio and extra nerd cred :)

Suntour forks are extra easy to work with. I can lower this fork to just about nothing if I wished to. As I already did for several of them.

I commuted on my 160mm enduro bike a few times when I only had 2 bikes and my other one wasn't ridable (I don't remember why specifically, I was in the middle of repairs or something). If you object then go fuck yourself.

I commute sometimes on my 29+ bike, 30k round trip. Pretty fun but the parking sucks so I usually ride the folder.

Meanwhile the rest of the commuters all seem to be riding fred bikes with clipless, no fenders, cheesecutter wheels, no luggage mounts so they all run a backpack. Literally the worst commuter bikes ever.

but my NXT was only $120 dollars at walmart, instead of the rip-offs at the bike shop. i dont need some fancy 500 dollar bike anyway, i'm not a racer. just something comfortable, that's why i got full suspension :^)

Depends on what full suspension bike. For me personally I'd rather ride my full suspension bike as it has multiple gears and the suspension comes in handy for off road shortcuts.

That's just my situation though, if it was only road commuting and that bike had gears (or I lived in a reasonably flat area) then I'd take that bike over a full susser.

Lots of people do here, on $3k+ nice full suspensions too. My city has fuckloads of off-road trails that are too rough for a road bike. Why not have some fun during a commute? It's all about the smiles per hour.

I have been but just because I'm incredibly picky about buying things so it's all I have right now.

I'm in the market for a decent road bike and a cheaper 2nd commuter (maybe a cx/tourer) but I haven't found the right bikes/deals yet
