Good idea or bad idea? Anyone else here like to run over cyclists who don't stop at stop signs? Then blame them when the police get there? Then have them pay for the damage to your car? Feels good.

I understand the whole "Muh momentum" argument. But you've stopped. Explain to me why you have to get going again before you get the light.

Back to the momentum issue: The public roads aren't your fucking racetrack. You aren't out there to improve your lap times. Loose the Lycra and commute like every other commuter. If you have to be there at a certain time, leave earlier to account for delays. Or go find a closed track. You don't see everyone in a Porsche Ruf using their drive to work to improve their Nürburgring track time.

Not him, but safety. Cyclists should pass before motorists get up to speed, and while the crossing is empty. When things get moving they risk getting crushed. That's why the Idaho stop has been observed to reduce the accident rate by 30-50%. Cyclists are more aware of drivers than (some) drivers are of cyclists. It therefore makes sense to give cyclists agency.

The crossing isn't empty. Crossing traffic may still be trying to get through.

What? Yes, it is or you don't cross. I just said as much. You take advantage of the period of time where the crossing traffics green light just turned red, but your red hasn't turned green yet. Do you think your light turns green the instant to others turn red? There are several seconds of delay.
Alternatively there is little crossing traffic and the whole green period isn't utilised.
