so i got my first road bike and im gonna change my chain each 3000km. just hitted those numbers for the first time. its a 105 drivetrain.

i have no experience cutting/installing chains. im gonna get a 105 chain (and order a bunch of them at once, so if anyone knos a cool place, let me know).

question is. what chain tool should i buy? i have heard it can get a bit tricky to join links..
what tools should i avoid? dont need nothing fancy or portable as im gonna be changing chains frequently it should happen only at my house... any info helps thanks.

KMC manufactures Shimano's chains. The difference is the master link system they use to connect the chain, which is far superior to shimano's system. Especially if you like to take your chain off to clean it without buying a new $5 pin every time

I use a KMC quick link with my Shimano chain, never had any issues. I'd recommend using one anyway, joining a chain with a pin can be kind of iffy IMO, especially on 10/11 speed chains

I do short to medium rides (like 50km tops) mostly on little to no elevation, but roads are kinda shit (Eastern Europe). Will folder do the job for me?
I love the idea of convenient storage and portability when not biking (thievery is a big issue in my country).

If you're on flat ground and a regular bike (so not a loaded cargo bike or one of those trike things with two passengers in the back) that's slow as shit. Get your saddle at the correct height (leg should be nearly straight at the bottom of the stroke) for the most efficient pedalling and choose and appropriate gear ratio, you'll probably want to aim for a cadence around 60rpm to start.

I started using my bike more and more in the last weeks and raised my average speed.
My queestion is: Am I slow?
My average speed when driving longer than 1 hour is around 25km/h (sometimes 24, sometimes 26) or 15,5mph.
This figure includes stops due to traffic.

Yes - *

* - most Huret shifters use Campy-style smaller end crimps, you might have to use a file (or a bench grinder) to remove a little bit of material to make the ends fit into shifters, but once that's done they'll work fine

Thanks, but I just found in the Q&A for some other brand-x universal gear cables that they only come with SRAM an Shimano knobs, so it ought not to work with my Campagnolo-compatible Huret shifters. Also found a cheaper campy gear cable set on Wiggle.

Galvanized cables, unlike stainless cables, are prone to rusting which will increase friction inside the cable housing (and in severe cases can cause the cable to get entirely stuck completely). They're not completely useless though, because rust on galvanized cables takes a fair bit of time to develop. If you live in a dry climate and store your bike properly, a galvanized cable will do just fine and give many years of good service. For everyone else, it's generally worthwhile to spend the couple of extra bucks for cables that will have a longer service life.

Saddle selection depends on hip shape/width and riding posture, not the amount of muscle and fat around the hips. But a good place to start looking, assuming the wife wants to ride in an semi-upright posture and has a poor strength:weight ratio would be something like a Brooks B67, preferably the model with springs, to offset the discomfort that can come from being a heavy-seated rider.

Insanely high or insanely low? I just looked up the hub and rim and those prices are an almost exact conversion from what they cost here in the UK. The spokes are perhaps priced a tiny bit high but nothing significant, although it looks like that may include the cost of a wheel build.

Is there a slot in the seattube? If so, you need an external seatclamp.

If you have a vintage frame exactly like the one pictured you'll need a quill seatpost (works just like a stem, but inside your seatpost). They're a thorough retarded idea from the late 80's, and to get one you'll have to DIY, find one on Ebay, or see if the shop called Yellow Jersey is still making them to order. Pic related.

No, they manufacture SOME of Shimano's chains.

Shimano is now releasing quick link chains on upcoming 11 speed chains. It doesn't apply quite yet, but it will kill off any reason to buy KMC.

These will help with poor roads. I think if the bike is a quality unit, it should have no problem. 20" wheels can be strong as hell. It might be a reasonable trade off to be able to fold it up and store it in your place.

Shimano tends to kill it in every sector they enter because bike parts are Soo poorly made and badly engineered.

Any particular advice on buying or riding? How fast can you normally ride a bicycle if you plan to commute? How many speeds do I need? I notice the rear gears have extremely close ratios. Used or New? How do you prevent getting smeared across an intersection?

we have a meme about that. it is a truthful meme: used 90s MTB with semi-slicks. you can get a great bike like that for around $200 or less. don't choose it yourself, go to /bbg/ and follow the instructions.

DON'T BUY THOSE FUCKING THINGS. fatbikes are a meme for retarded noobs. there are a few that created the trend from reputable sellers that are for a highly specialized type of terrain, but the ones at your local store at that price are what are known as BSOs (google it) and they are a horrible value.

Tbqhwyf those low end components are not so bad for casual cruising. And those cup and cone Quando hubs are really easy to service. If you're jumping curbs or laying down a lot of watts, get good components. For normies who ride twice a year, chinesium does the job just fine

What do you mean by slipping? The chain isn't reliably moving to the larger chainring?

Could be the cable stretching and not moving the derailer over far enough (adjust the barrel adjuster, pull move cable through the derailer, or replace the cable) or it could be that the limit screw has either moved or there's some crud in there that needs cleaning out.

It could also be that the chain and/or chainring is worn and the pickup ramps and pins on the chainring can't properly lift the chain.

lbs has a set of roval slx 24 disc wheels on sale for $500 dollary-doos but i know dick about wheelsets. these wheels use DT 350 hubs, which seem fine after about 2 minutes on google.

this is for an sscx bike, because i watched a race here in town last fall and i'm fucking doing that shit this year.

Haven't rode one yet so I'm just asking as precaution. The bike would mostly be used to go from bus stop to bus stop or very short trips. I would try to avoid hills when I can, but my logic was to keep it simple with a single speed since I'd be folding and unfolding it a lot.

I have an old road bike with friction shifters on the stem and I find that position very uncomfortable. This. If you're spending money at all, don't do it half-arsed. Get what you actually want. A set of brifters, cassette and a derailleur is no money in the big scheme of things. Search 'MicroShift SB-R472 Double 2X7' on Ebay and get a 7spd cassette/freewheel to go with it unless you have one already. The brifters are fifty bucks and the cassette another ten.

The thing is I paid $20 for the bike and it's really not worth putting more money into. The new shifters I posted earlier are only $10. I'll be using this bike for a 14 mile round trip commute that's all hills and truthfully only the easiest 3, maybe 4 gears will see any action.

Okay so against advice i was given, my cheap-bastard nature overtook me and I got a $200 mountain bike. The model is Upland Raider, 29" tires and Shimano disk brakes and controls, which seemed decent for the price point.

I know the rest of the bike, especially the front shocks are probably crap. I took one (short) test ride (in the rain) I noticed there is a delay in shifting sometimes and the front sprocket doesn't want to upshift tto the tallest gear.

Anything I should look for now that I own this thing?

Actually 8 speed freewheels do exist, however I don't know how common they are. A 7 speed cassette is very unlikely on any new bike when 8 speed is so cheap and on all the lower end bikes I've seen . 7 speed freewheels are probably going to be relegated to the BSOs, children's bikes, cheap hub motor electric bikes, and perhaps some niche things like folding bikes.

Basically, look for anything 8 speed or above and anything below is gonna be a piece of shit. Any bike that I would personally consider to be decent should be at least 9 speed and you'll probably want to consider saving instead of settling for 8 speed if it's out of your budget.

Anyway, it is not really worth worrying about.

You can always get a different hub, and in the meantime your cogsets will be like $15 and your chains will be like $5 and both will last longer than newer 9, 10, 11 speed drivetrains. This may not seem like a big deal, but if you are commuting or otherwise clocking consistent miles it can be kind've nice to just not give a single billionth of a fuck.

You probably have multiple independent issues each with misleading symptoms. Start by thoroughly cleaning and inspecting the drivetrain.

Does your bike have a derailleur or an IGH? The "slipping" you are describing indicates different things, depending.

In particular, "occasionally falls into no gear (pedal, no resistance, no anything) before going back to normal" is pretty fucking weird for a normal bike to do, ever. The only thing I can think of which would cause that is really super fucked up or dirty pawls/star ratchet in your freehub body.

Also check to make sure your derailleur hangar is perfectly straight. Strongly consider replacing your chain, cogs, and possibly chainrings.

What would you say is the smallest tire you should use to ride on stone dust (crushed limestone)?

The road bike I am getting has 25mm wheels (slicks). That is probably not going to make for a very comfortable, nor safe, ride. Right?

I only ride on pavement as it is, so I don't think getting larger tires would be worth it. Just wondering.

There's many factors to consider but 25mm is doable. Main factor imo is how much 'sink' will the upcoming gravel path have. As long as you got tires that can float over whatever surface you're mashing, you're good.

the high and low limit screws refer to left-to-right adjustment of the alignment of the derailleur in relation to the cogs. you generally want to set your HIGH limit to have the derailleur jockey wheel (the small wheel at the elbow joint of the derailleur) be directly in-line with the largest cog with the chain on that gear and adjust the low-limit to be just slightly outside (to the right, no more than a millimeter off-center) of perfect alignment when on the smallest cog.

the A-limit adjusts the tension wheel (the small wheel at the end of the derailleur arm), you don't want this to be superfuckingtight or superfuckingloose, you want it juuuuust right.

pic related is with 25mm kendas so it's doable but there's a lot of hop and sink on loosely packed rocks, large and small. Comfort and danger will greatly depend on your individual skill

It actually came mostly assembled, to my surprise. It's not hard to build a bike though, I'd recommend RJ the bike guy, notably his videos on converting bikes- where he replaces handlebars, derailluer, gears, wheels, and basically shows you how to assemble a bike.

For mine I just stuck the handlebars on and the pedals. I did install some mudguards which took some time and a little bodging but it works, and they're off most of the time anyway.

How built they are depends on where you get it from. And yes, the box my bike came in was fucking huge. It was larger than my bed.

Most likely you'll have to partly disassemble it. Have a look on the top for some screws, remove those and the gear indicator (or just the top panel if there's no indicator) should pop off, then try tightening any screws you see inside. It could also be that it's just worn out in which case you'd need to replace it if it bothers you that much.

Geometry is probably going to be closer to a road bike along with sharing other parts like the wheels, fork, and maybe the gearing.

Making it lighter is probably going to be more money than it's worth as it's going to mean new wheels. The next largest weight saving would then be from new tyres and tubes, possibly a new fork, then drivetrain (crankset and cassette mainly), then bars and seatpost.

Question 1: FD (pic related)
Bought a road bike from Costco that comes with the new Sora derailleurs.

However, the cable routing on the FD looks odd.

It does almost a full clockwise loop around the pin on top and the bolt on the bottom.

Is it supposed to be like that? I can't find its manual online. Too new?

Question 2: Seatpost
Thinking of getting a carbon seatpost in hopes that it'd provide more dampening. Should I get one that matches my seat tube size (30.9mm) or get a shim to use with a 27.2mm? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Question 3: Aliexpress
Any tips on finding good quality / good deal listing on there? The system seems a mess. Right now I search for my item and sort them by # of orders, hoping the popular listings are good.

Also, what are some good stuff to buy from there? I've been buying lots of small tools. Going to buy a seatpost as mentioned above.

Question 4: Swapping frames
I'm thinking of swapping everything except the frame, fork, bar, bar tape, cables, and cable housings between my 2008 Giant TCR A1 and my new Costco bike. (The Giant's frame doesn't fit me.) Then I'm going to sell the bike with the Giant frame. The Costco bike comes with a no-name 3 piece crank and square tapered bottom bracket that I don't... like. Otherwise I'd save myself the trouble.

What problems might I encounter? I already know I'll need to buy a ring adapter for the FD because the new frame doesn't have blaze on holes; and I might need to buy new chain for at most 1 bike. What I worry about the most is that the bottom bracket hole may be different size.

probably just an improperly routed cable, can you post any other angles? how does it shift?

as for carbon seatpost, that's been answered for you

I took a few pics with an actually camera.

pic 1 and 2 is how it looks like from the factory.

pic 3 is what it looks like after I attempted to reroute it by following the indentation / groove. There's now a big gap that doesn't go away. Maybe I didn't tighten it enough? (did 6N of torque though.)

pic 4 is what it looks like disassembled.

I haven't tried tuning the FD yet. Don't know how it shifts.

Looks like it's meant to go over the pin judging by the relief cutout to the left of the pin, as the cable is pulled and the part with the bolt pivots downwards the cable will go up into that cutout. How you have the cable pointing downwards into the groove next to the bolt also looks correct, it was probably just lazy assembly that resulted in it twisting further around from the factory.

As for why it uses the pin instead of just moving the bolt further upwards, it's so that the cable can move freely as it pivots instead of bending at a clamping point. Pretty good idea.

Regarding the seatpost, there's no reason a carbon one can't be made to flex and it can be done so that it only does so fore and aft but is stiff side to side. That said a carbon post won't automatically be stiffer or flexier than what you currently have. You'll need to read some reviews and look for mentions of flex and damping.

Looking for some purchasing advice. I'm a 330lb lard ass looking to buy a bike that will last me through the summer, I looked at local shops but they start at $700 Canadian, and I'm looking to spend closer to $200 or less. I'm 6' tall and basically just want something I can use to get riding again and lose some weight. I've heard department store bikes are a nightmare, but I don't want to spend $700 on a "high end" bike, just to have it fall apart because I'm too fat. Any help would be appreciated.

I did a maintenance day on Monday which means I didn't ride, I did a 40 mile (most I've ever done) ride yesterday and I was going to do a ride today but my legs still feels pretty sore. I wouldn't recommend the R300 you mention, though. You would end up in the same boat you are in now, with a desire to upgrade the parts. Is that what you were planning on doing?

I'm about to dive into off-road myself. What I've done is put 43mm gravel tires on my touring bike and I'm gonna hit the trails this weekend

I don't think disc brakes are 100% required if you aren't going to be doing anything technical off the bat. V-brakes + good pads are probably fine. I'll find out soon enough.

With that in mind I'd consider doing the same to whatever bike you have, or picking a rigid fork beater MTB with V-brakes. Or slapping mini-v's on a really old canti mtb. a mini V-brake is about $15 these days. New cables, tires, tune-up, ready to go

I wouldn't say that's a huge concern and there are far more important things to look out for. A dropper post for example will help with manuals and bunny hops.

Other things to look out for are a two piece crankset, easiest way to tell is there won't be a bolt on the drive side attaching the crank arm to the axle. Also go for at least 9 speed but preferably 10 or 11, probably a double (two chainrings up front) to help with climbing and a clutched derailer would be nice to have (Shadow Plus from Shimano, not sure what SRAM calls theirs). For the fork an air one instead of a coil spring is preferred, look for lockout and a separate compression adjustment is a nice bonus as well as a handlebar remote for the lockout.

used hardtail, aluminum or steel. air fork, short chainstay, long, low and slack. trust me, you'll have a lot more fun and be more versatile than with a strictly xc race bike.

Yes. In order:
Better pads
Better setup (toe in and cable routing without kinks)
Clean the rims with magic eraser blocks
Low friction cables and housing
Better brakes (move to second topmost position if existing ones are no-name or ancient)

The R55C4 pads sound a bit 'harsh' if compared to CS Salmons, but they maintain their performance very well in the wet, last a long time, don't seem to age, fade very little and are head and shoulders above "standard" one piece blocks. Chose the ones with shoes if you don't have shoes already.

You don't want it too tight as mud will collect there and slow you down and in the worst case a stick will get stick and send you over the bars. This is assuming you want to take it off road, if you're sticking to roads then you can go pretty tight.

One piece pads typically attach with a nut.

You can tell by looking at them one has a clearly removable and replaceable pad the other one is one unit meant to be discarded

Depends on context - if you're squeezing into a very narrow shoulder, then yes, that can be dangerous because it invites close passes and makes you less predictable if you have to swing into the travel lane to avoid debris. But if you have a wide paved shoulder (5' - 14') then there's really no downside to riding on it except for encountering a bit more gravel on the pavement.

That'll be more than fine. If you use a multispeed chain you will be able to have a greater offset equal to that which would be possible by cross chaining a geared bike. However a large offset will add friction and increase wear and it's not that hard to get the chainline fairly straight.

No, that's less than the distance between cogs on any cassette (about half as much). I wouldn't worry about straightening it until the outer plate starts contacting the tooth as it goes onto the chainring (unless you use a narrow wide ring) as that's going to contribute to wear. I would guess that'd probably be like 10mm or more.

2. Water, paper towels or an automotive towel. Gently wipe down the frame, then gently wipe it dry. Cleaning the drivetrain can be a more involved process, perhaps requiring special tools or perhaps not.

3. Most bicycle parts are made from alloys that won't rust, but if you have an older bike or an inexpensive one, there may be exceptions. Pressurized water may make it through bearing seals.

As long as you don't start crashing it should be fine.

If you use drop bars you have more positions for your hands so it should be more comfortable.

You may want lower your saddle though for a less aggressive pose.
If you tilt your saddle up (just a little) it also reduces some load from your hands and therefore shoulders.

There's no rules for bottlecage colors, and a really good answer would require seeing a picture of your bike first, but I'd expect black will turn out looking neutral if you have lots of black components on the bike already, while red cages that match the frame will stand out. Either would be fine though.

You shouldn't need to change anything on the derailleur, probably (is it a medium cage?), and you should be able to get away without lengthening the chain, provided you don't ever shift into big/big, that said adding a couple of links shouldn't be hard.

Gear indexing is about the number of gears, not their size.
Big-big means what it says. Big gear with big gear- because if you think about it, it takes more chain to go around larger gears.
So you should stick on the new cassette then adjust if needed.

Can you put, say, a 7 speed cassette on a wheel designed for a 10 speed cassette?

What I'm trying to do is stretch an old BSO's rear triangle to fit 700C wheels. I've already "dry-fit" the "new" wheels by jamming them in to the frame without stretching it properly. Problem is, the smallest cog makes the chain rub on the stay. So I figure if I take off a few cogs, it won't be a problem.

Do brake cables stretch? I bought a 10pack off amazon for cheap and have used them on two separate mtb drop bar conversions. First one was super squishy and soon realized I had purchased standard road levers with a long pull. This time I did it right and got some short-pull levers. Still moderately squishy. Wheels are as true as I can get em, pads are adjusted around 1mm from rim and yet I still bottom out the levers and can't get skids. Is it just my cables?

There are however a few other areas where the squish could be coming from, it could be the cable housings compressing, the brake calipers flexing, the frame and housing stops flexing if you're not running full length housings, the levers flexing, and finally the pads and rim compressing.

That said even with the squish you should be able to lock up the wheels still if you're running the pads that close to the rim, if the levers are touching the bar and preventing you from applying enough force it seems like you still have an issue with the cable pull. Try them again with some flat bar levers that you know for certain are short pull.

The housing I'm using is ever so slightly loose in the full length brazed frame stops. They're(the housing+cable) are longer than they should be in anticipation of maybe getting a taller stem. They do flex, but the cable fits snugly within them and should in theory have very little play. You could get a Sunrace 11-42 cassette and maybe consider dropping down to 30t if you're okay with losing some of the top gear. 11 speed will get you 11-46 unless you spend a lot on a Hope 10-48t and freehub (and have a compatible hub) or 11-50 if you use On Up's expander cog (10-50 if you buy their freehub).

GX Eagle is a bargain compared to X01/XX1 but still ridiculously expensive for what it is (especially the cassette which will need to be replaced eventually). I'm guessing you already have a SRAM freehub and are fine with using their components?

Realign is just loosen, adjust and retighten.
Did you check the headset bearings? They might have been contaminated. I had to replace the bottom bearings on my fred sled, fixed it right up.

Take the bearing out and spin it between your fingers, it should be smooth. If it feels crunchy that's how you know it's fugged.

I wouldn't say 5'9" is inbetween for most brands, usually medium tops out around 5'10". Also they're recommendations as sizing isn't as crucial as with road bikes, smaller without going too small is usually best so go with the medium.

27.5" are no better or worse than 26" in practice, however 26" is slowly being phased out in favour of 27.5".

Yes disc brakes are cool, a shit load better than rim brakes especially for mountain biking and there's no reason not to get them. I'm going to assume since you're asking about them you're looking at low end bikes as those are the only ones that will come with rim brakes, avoid them.

I have no personal experience with Decathlon bikes but some of them look pretty good. I've shopped there a few times (for bike parts as well as other stuff) and it's a cool store.

Going used can save you a shit load of money but probably isn't a good idea for someone that needs to ask these questions. There's a lot of things to look out for and second hand bikes will likely need some work done to them, either as soon as you get them or in the near future.

By smaller I mean a medium frame, a small size would be for someone that's like 5'6" or shorter. If anything a larger frame is going to cause you more discomfort as you'll be stretched out and you'll need to buy a shorter stem to try and remedy that. A smaller frame is just going to make you sit more upright, potential issues you could have would be having your knees touch the bars or having the seatpost extended out of the frame a dangerous amount but like I said that would be unlikely unless you went with an XS/S size.

I just had a look at Decathlon's B'Twin bikes and they recommend medium for 5'5" to 5'9" which is quite a large range and large is for 5'9" to 5'11" which is a tiny range. As someone that's 5'10" I'd go for the medium even though I'm only one inch short for the XL. Being one inch taller could mean my legs are one inch longer (in which case I'd ride the same size frame but raise the saddle an inch) or I could have a one inch longer torso in which case I'd either be more upright or want a longer frame or stem. Like I said, the recommendations aren't precise at all.

I ride a medium frame btw, 18" seat tube with 595mm stack and 403mm reach. Decathlon doesn't give these measurements (or any geometry specs at all by the looks of it) but they'll give you something to aim for if you shop anywhere else.

Well whilst you can commute on the road using pretty much any tyre you don't really want to use something really aggressive as it'll slow you don't and reduce grip, but there are plenty of tyres out there that are suitable for on and off road use (just not super loose stuff). I use Schwalbe Rapid Robs and they roll pretty well on road and are good off road for harder dirt. For commuting you want to look out for a fork that has lockout (makes the fork rigid) so that less energy is wasted compressing the suspension, and the same goes for the rear shock if you get a full suspension bike.

That's what the 10 speed was for, but I'm now moving in a nice hilly area with cool trails innawoods, and I wanted something newish.
I'm in France, so finding a nice almost new second hand Decathlon bike doesn't seem really hard, but I have to know exactly what I'm looking for, because good deals don't last long usually.
Case in point: I just missed a nice Rockrider 520 with a size M frame in my area on leboncoin.fr

I can get XT M8000 for £160 plus £40 for a new shifter (because Shimano love to fuck people over when it comes to backwards compatibility) but I'm really not sure I want to go Shimano again.
