yesterday i saw a guy with a big bag of aluminum cans sleeping on the bart. i wanted to take pics of his feet and shoes, but that would be rude, they weree disgusting. he got up and started peeing on the door then walked off at the next exit, i recognized him from the neighborhood i used to live in, i once caught him stealing metal from my scrap pile.

earlier that day i was on an airplane and the guy next to me had his and his son's seat changed to first class becuase of some terrible smell (im assuming he meant me) i figure youre probably quite a rich AND snob if you can afford to pay $300+ to not have to smell something for 3 hours. i usually dont shower with soap and about 30hours prior to the flight i had washed with soap so something about the natural oils and microorganisms being stripped off your body. most of my disgusting dirty laundy was in my checked luggage

Extremely underrated. It hasn't been upgraded since the 60s but STILL manages to blow every metro in the United States completely out of the water. The federal government was right to make it a model for all future development, shame it didn't work out though.

pretty much the worst designed railroad in the united states:

- unique broad gauge, which prevents any sort of easy rolling stock procurement
- unique 1000vDC power system, which prevents any sort of easy power system maintence
- unique computerized rain control system, which prevents any sort of easy signals maintence
- unique wheel profile, which prevents any sort of easy wheel assembly maintence

This is why BART has at least two major power outages per month now, while the cars themselves cause ear damage in riders. It won't be fixed until everything is replaced, a process which will take ten more years.

But damn, I knew about BART's broad gauge, but not that it was "incompatible" in just about everything else.

Still good if you need to get across the Bay Area in a hurry (I live in San Diego and visit every few years or so).

Yeah, part of their network uses 5 ft 2 1⁄4 in (1,581 mm) gauge track. It was a common tactic for streetcar lines to use unique, non-standard gauges way back when to discourage big railroads from doing hostile takeovers.

They use 5 ft. 6 in. broad gauge, which is actually one of the more common broad gauges. Argentina, Chile, much of India, and Victoria in Australia use it, so if they do an overhaul of the system, they can turn to those guys' suppliers for at least some things.

In 2004-5 our EFE (Empresa Ferrocarriles del Estado, by then a ratnest of corruption) bought from them some of the shittiest used trains they had for a god-awful-high sum, in a move called the biggest embezzlement of our train history - we're talking upwards US$1.400M. EFE refused a cheaper, more reasonable offer for alll-new, guaranteed chinese trains, but they went for 90's trains that worked kinda OK but failed miserably after few months of operations, and got stuck for years with a shitton of immovile steel.

Having said this, I once went on BART and incredibly, to me it was still more shittier lol.

I loke to batter my eardrums while relaxing on the most comfy seats I ever had. Especially in the transbay tube. And the section parallel with the vineyards and the highway up north/east towards Pittsburg/Bay Point with screeching wheels inside of the tight valley is lovely too.

BART is weird. All the media and anecdotes ive heard from it were incredibly negative. But the same goes for the NYC subway which i find to be excellent (if dirty). I guess the most comparable system in the USA would be Washington DC as it service shed is as large as commuter rail systems and it passes through many municipal and even county lines

for what it was designed for it still works and is well maintained.
The generation before us did not invest in infrastructure at all so things haven't been upgraded.
As a native and current resident I firmly believe the public transit systems around the bay area will be radically transformed soon.

This is objectively false. They are in the process of replacing the entire fleet, most of the track, and most of the electrical infrastructure because it's very old and hasn't been maintained properly.
