Hi guys

I'm looking at getting my first hybrid bike. It'll be about 8 miles of commuting a day (4 each way), and almost always roads or pavements. Link/pic related is pretty much what i'm settled on right now but my knowledge is lacking in this so if anyone has any suggestions for me that'd be cool.

tl;dr is this an okay choice?

Yeah it's good. People will no doubt bring up my trolling in the past but I'm being completely serious, it's a decent bike for a good price with little to complain about.

Two of the things I didn't like on mine was the SRAM shifters and the mechanical brakes and those have both been fixed on that model. It'd be nice if they put a Shimano Hollowtech crankset on it and I guess a carbon fork would be nice too (and it doesn't have a tapered headtube so aftermarket options are limited).

Yeah for double the cost you don't really gain a huge amount. The carbon fork will increase comfort a little but you can always slap a bigger tyre on the front (think it can take up to 40mm) if you ride on particularly bumpy roads, the Tektro brakes will be good enough, and whilst the simplicity of the 1x is nice it has quite a bit less range and doesn't go quite as low.

Ah okay, good to know. I feel content in my choice now since you obviously have a way better idea of this stuff than me. So how much leeway is there for adjustment once I commit to the 54cm size? I'm 5'11 or possibly 6'0 so that seems like the obvious one to go for. If I have them build it they should adjust it for me, right?

If you are gonna pick it up from the store and can try the 49 and 54 that would be ideal. If not I would probably recommend the 49, that's what I have and I'm 5'10" and have the saddle quite forward. The Boardman site actually recommends the 54 for those 6 foot and above so those on Halfords are a little off. Your inseam is also a measurement to take as if you have short legs for your height then you'll be hitting your nuts on the top tube every time you have to stop. Mine is 81cm and I've got a good amount of nut clearance.

As for Halfords adjusting the bike to your fit, I wouldn't count or rely on it. Saddle height is pretty easy to get close though (high enough so your leg is nearly straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke, without being so high that you rock side to side at the hips whilst pedalling).

Sadly they don't have them in stock to check, only direct delivery. But if i'm committing to this price I want the right size so i'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they recommend. I'd imagine they'll have something else of the same size I can try and see which is best.

I'm not familiar with Boardman so can't comment on their quality, but the style/geometry of that bike is good for commuting. Other bikes to consider: Kona Dew Plus, GT Tachyon, Trek FX, Specialized Sirrus (or Vita if you're female), Cannondale Bad Boy, Giant Escape.
