>>1102098I did a fair amount of mountain biking over a decade ago and commuted by bike i college, but I didn't really pick the bike back up until 2015. Been doing a hell of a lot of riding over the past two years. Gotta be good at climbing in the bay area because all the fun stuff is up in the mountains.
Overall, I ate a hotdog, a tri-tip sandwich (purchased on the ride), two salami and cheese sandwiches (that I packed), and a package of shot blocks. I didn't touch the two cliff bars in my bag, but it was good to know they were there. I drank ~1.5L of electrolyte drink, probably 3.5-4L of water, a lemonade, and a coke.
Full report:
The two of us stopped at the peak of Highway 9 (~25 miles in) and grabbed a hot dog and a lemonade from the guy at the junction. Stopped at the Big Basin park HQ (~40 miles); I ate one of the two small sandwiches I'd packed. We both partially refilled on water there as well. Stopped in Boulder Creek (~50 miles) for lunch.
Lunch was a tri-tip sandwich and a coke at a deli in the back of a liquor store. Good shit. I felt great, but my buddy said it really wasn't sitting well during the long climb out of the town.
We should have re-filled on water before we left town. We both were running really low by mile 60 and were fully out by mile 67. That was the max altitude peak, fortunately... The hot dog stand at Hwy 9 and 35 had left for the day, but we found a drinking fountain at the fire station around mile 72 - stopped there, filled back up entirely, and snacked a bit. I ate my second sandwich.
Around this point we realized we'd added some distance to the route, and our 80 mile ride was actually going to be a 90 mile ride. Can't do 90 and not make it a century, right? And there's no honor in circling the block back in flatland to rack up distance at the end of a mountain ride. So once we descended Page Mill Rd, we did an extra little loop out to Portola Valley; that's what the little extra bulge at the upper left is all about.
