Thread for narrow gauge railways which closed and are totally lost or abandoned.

Such as the Rye And Camber Tramway which ran from 1895 to 1939.

Before anyone says "Anon you dumbfuck tramways and railways are two different things!"

It was still considered a railway regardless.

Does 1067mm count as NG?
There used to be a lot of Light Railways/Tramways here in Java built for extraction of natural resources
Some had their axle load increased,most lines are closed with the last in the mid-70's

They could probably revive it today as a tourist attraction if they really wanted to. A good amount of the track and stations are intact and the whole line runs on a golf course so property rights aren't an issue. All you would need is an investment of a few million to lay new track, build a couple of coaches, and buy/restore a narrow gauge Bagnall (or alternatively, be a cheap bastard and buy a diesel mockup).

Get the kids outta your hair by having them ride the choo choo while you golf and get drunk off your ass. Sounds like a great way to rip off rich people.

A lot of the locomotives out there are restored, such as Talyllyn.

But sure if you find abandoned rolling stock or locomotives sure you could try.

Sure, it sounds doable, Golf Links Station is intact and it would be the fourth Colonel Stephens railway in preservation.

And all of his railways were a cheap and simple affair and probably can be restored using such fashion.

From what I've read, Maenofferen's steam locomotives were scrapped or sold off to heritage railways decades ago, but a few of their electric and diesel locomotives stayed in service well into the 80s and are still at the quarry abandoned along a lot with their rubbish and slate wagons (pic related).

Suppose the owners of the quarry didn't mind an autistic American bringing in a couple of pickup trucks and making off with some of their old pieces of junk (let's say one diesel locomotive and six wagons) that wasn't deemed worth its weight in scrap, I could obtain the blueprints for the locomotive and fabricate replacements for the worn out and rusted parts, get the train back up and running, and give it to a museum run as an exhibit (i.e. maybe running it around the perimeter of the building periodically and children can try to chase after it).

Yet that interior looks very rickety.

Also I'm guessing US Narrow Gauge tracks would accomidate such locomotives I see.

The Billerica & Bedford.

America's first narrow gauge was built in Massachusetts and used unique cab-foward 0-4-4 engines like pic related.

Living in the area myself, it would have been a comfy little recreational train ride. But a couple years ago they tore up the old tracks to build a fucking bike path...

It sounds like a same fate the Leek And Manifold Valley Light Railway had, being torn up and turned into a cycle path, yet it was not Britain's first narrow gauge railway though.

The Leek And Manifold opened in 1904 and closed thirty years later.

British narrow gauge railways are as old as railways themselves in general.

I've always wished the Denver, South Park, and Pacific was still running since it passed through some incredible scenery. The "Pacific" part was a bit optimistic since it only went west as far as Leadville, Colorado.

Note quite. The Denver and Rio Grande in Colorado, which was initially 3 ft gauge exclusively, started in 1871. The B&B didn't start running until 1877.

Green Mountain Cog Railway, Mount Desert Island, Maine.

Based off of the famous Mt. Washington Cog railway in New Hampshire, and using identical locos and rolling stock. Ran on 4'8" marsh rack tracks. Went bankrupt after only 7 years.

Technically narrow gauge (by one half inch).

Preserved locomotive for 762mm rail in Sakhalin, the island which was transferred from Japan to Russia, and the raio itself should have been regauged into 1067 around the time and currently undergoing efforts to further regauge into 1524mm rail
Speaking of which, seems like a few years ago in Sakhalin they just ripped apart a 750mm gauge rail
