Yeah, I hated it during the competition, but now it's really grown on me. I just wish the state had the political balls to bust the MBTA's ass and give the Greater Boston Area a system worthy of that map.
If I could make myself dictator of MA, I'd scrap the GLX and South Coast Rail and build the North-South Rail Link, electrifying every line inside 128, and run RER style EMU service on 10-15 minute headways from park-and-rides on 128 through the link to paired terminals on the other end, keeping the push-pull trainsets for CR service outside 128, with 2/3rds of the fleet as diesels terminating at the surface stations and 1/3rd using dual mode locos for trans-link service.
Now, you'd effectively double or triple the T's rapid transit coverage for about half of what the Big Dig cost. Bonus points if you could dangle the carrot of through-the-link Amtrak service from ME and NH to NYP as a means of securing that sweet, sweet federal infrastructure money to get it all done.
