>>1316057Dont even ask... I do things like hand scraping/howeling teak surfaces back to somewhat uniform shape where they were vandalised by electric sander (general policy nowadays is, if it has an electric cord and could be used on wood, throw it overboard).
It is an interesting problem tho. You have a group of volonteers in their later years who have lifetime of maritime experience and skills, but focused on somewhat cheap and easy maintenance. They are not used to think in historical accuracy and making the ship very nice. And also fuckton of incompetency.. six of the bulls eyes are screwed in spot by normal screws for nuts directly to the wood... probably because their heads matched the sinkholes in the brass rings while being also simple flatscrews (the only we want to use since no cross and certainly not fucking stars were used in 1869)
I want to polish the glass because we want to cut the costs where we can. We get fuckall funds from the state. never enough to do anything properly.
Anyway, Today I began re-caulking in places where the caulking iron went too deep (we dont change all the hemp now, I just hammer it down, pour pitch on top of it and move to scraping and greasing the deck as that is more crucial now. BTW look at that brand new caulking mallet in the picture. The quality of this rather expensive tool is abysmal. They dont even use the proper carbon steel ring, just metal stripe bent and welded (with the weld bulk not grinded away ofc). Next time Ill make the mallet myself...
