you have the most control over handling, the best visibility, and you can jump potholes
its also easier to react at low speed, since you can tap your foot down if you stop suddenly
bents are mainly for cross country cruising and racing
they do have shit turning circles compared to an upright, and dealing with traffic on one is hell
cars passing you is bad too, because they are likely to not see you, since you're lower down
balance is hard because moment of inertia is quadratically proportional to circle radius, so less height = much less stability
you get used to it if you ride one for a while through
as for the issues you had with the drivetrain, you just were on a shitty bent then
fwd ones don't require as many idlers in the drivetrain, and don't require connecting several chains together
rwd drivetrains do tend to suck a bit, but are simpler to use since rwd is what people are used to
there are bents out there with better drivetrains than that, and using rollers instead of cogs is pretty bad imo
the thing to remember, is just that bents are for a different type of riding than you were doing
