>>1121084hell yes it could, rigid 26" mtbs make fantastic touring rigs if you get them set up right
first thing to do is make sure drivetrain is in tip top condition, and wheels are newly trued
old 90s rigids usually have 36 spoke count wheels, which can take a pretty heavy load no problem
also, they have strong frames and good rack eyelets, so not too hard to rig up a good rack system
you're probably going to want to do something about the bars and cockpit since flat bars are uncomfy
my recommendation would be to add good curved barends with a bar wrap over them
that gives you 2 or 3 new hand positions, all of which are more comfy than normal flat bar position
or nigger rig some drop bars or mustache bars on there and mess with the stem to get them at a comfy height
this is easier to do on old 90s rigids than newer hybrid type bikes because the 90s rigids usually have cantis
most road levers have a short pull ratio, which is compatible with cantis, but not with newer direct pull v brakes
then, you're gonna want to put fenders on it for when it rains and get some good racks, both front and rear
i would definitely go with a low rider type rack in front as it will make the bike handle much better when loaded
also, get a good saddle, wtb makes some good ones for not too expensive, or you could go full brooks meme
