touring bikes and old rigid mountain bikes are better as commuters and general purpose transportation bikes for anything other than short trips
the primary purpose of upright, step through frame bikes, or "utility bikes" is to make very short, low speed trips through dense areas
however, not everyone's transportation needs are short, and these "utility bikes" are not really suited to longer trips or trips which require climbing steep hills, riding on bad roads/gravel roads, or making a trip quickly

That does not mean I can´t commute on a rigid MTB/hybrid/roadbike or that it would be worse for me.
My roadbike is significantly more efficient at getting my from A to B than a utility bike and can into cargo when I add my bike trailer.

That is the great thing about biking, there is no single right way to do it, you can do whatever works for you.

Except they are not.

People ride bicycles because they're cheap, practically free. That's the only reason it's popular in the low countries.

Touring bicycles costs hundreds of euros and have increased maintenance costs. If you make cycling expensive people will just buy mopeds.

A touring bike basicly IS a rigid MTB with racks, fenders and more narrow tires.

Also maintainance is basicly the same as on a roadbike, just the FD is slightly different to setup on a 3x than on a 2x
>adjust cable lenth to get middle ring right
