Sup, /n/. I live in Moscow and it's like -1°C here already. How do you deal with temperatures like that? Does it look weird when I put my ski goggles on to protect me from the snow? Or like taking a vacuum flask with tea instead of a camelbak?

When it's cold enough that I need to worry about my eyebrows freezing, I wear a ski mask too. -25°C is the coldest I've had an opportunity to try, with my ski mask, balaclava, liner + long sleeve + jacket, winter gloves, leggings, extra socks and winter boots. Riding around wasn't bad at all, but stopping for any length of time is not fun.

Studded tires are important if your city doesn't take fantastic care of the roads/paths you're using. I have one vacuum-insulated water bottle that comes with me on my winter rides, along with one normal one. I fill the normal one with hot water and drink from it first, before it freezes.

The shitty part about winter is how roadways narrow and drivers have less control, so routes that are safe the rest of the year can be sketchy as hell in the winter.

Good windstoppers are important, because usually winds are more of a problem than cold and snow.
Simply dressing warm will make you sweat and hinder your movement.
Handlebar hoods work nice if your arms get cold fast, but windproof mittens are as effective.

In addition i carry a lightweight PVC raincoat and chemical toe/hand warmers for emergencies, where i underestimate cold and end up away from heatsources.

Winter can be tough to dress for, as many factors come into play. Temperature, wind direction, wind speed, .... and rolling resistance.

What works well when it is cold but before the snow falls, can become unbearably hot when there is snow on the ground. The added rolling resistance of plowing through snow, makes you work harder and generate more heat. Breatheable clothing is important, unless winter is on the warm damp side, something like Gore Windstopper would be preferable to Goretex.

Wind is huge when it comes to riding in the cold. When I switch from going upwind to downwind, I unzip my jacket right away to keep from overheating.

For my ride log spreadsheet I make notes about the weather conditions and what I wore to help with future rides.

A couple things I might experiment with this winter is a helmet visor as an alternative to goggles, and handlebar wind deflectors to keep the wind off my hands.

I've got experience riding moter bikes in the winter. As far as jackets go I'd recommend a light plastic with inner lining, as I'm always worried about spills. The biggest factor for me was keeping my hands warm. They do sell full heated suits and gloves that you could rig to a battery held in you coat or on the bike.

You do what you must do to feel comfortable on your ride.

Just don't overdress. Being chilly at the beginning of the ride is better than getting drenched in sweat halfway through and freeze for the rest of the ride/commute
Decent headgear yo, ski mask, balaclava etc.

And waterproof gear just in case, it's useful during snowfall.

The main issue for me is that my ties get cold af. Also my fingers. I could wear like 4 pairs of socks and double up my gloves and I'm still freezing. Is there any solution to this?

As for gloves - get better gloves. Stuff like winter motorcycle gloves or snowmobile gloves

Get some proper winter gloves. Mittens would be optimal for heat but operating bikes with them is a bit awkward. It can be done but it's not the best. There are also cycling specific winter gloves like pic related. I got them for last winter and they were fine during my 45 minute commute to around -20°C. Colder than that and I switched to proper mittens.

For cold toes good overshoes or winter shoes is the way to go. To around -15°C I just use my summer cycling shoes with overshoes on my commute. On colder days I switch to regular winter shoes and ride flats. There are also some winter specific cycling shoes but I haven't gotten ones yet as the overshoes have been good enough.

If you're going for longer rides on really cold days handwarmers are awesome when thrown inside a mitten. There are also electronically heated insoles which are awesome on cold days.

If your hands get cold, these "extreme cold weather" army/airforce mittens are extremely useful. $30-$40 (USD) is much better than $150 handlebar mittens. I've been using them every day and they keep my hands warm even on downhills in -10F weather

- 10 C at most and I usually cope well with the cold.
however this winter I want to keep commuting 20 km roundtrip everyday.
about 60% of my commute is gravel. right now I'm running raceking protections and I love them. I'll probably have to change to something more studdet right ?

the cities are mostly taken care of but I have no experience with gravel roads during the winter.

I'd say, wear more clothes but, as pointed out already, not overdress - getting drenched in sweat is way more dangerous than just being chill early on.
How are winters in Moscow anyway? More Siberia-like with little to now snowing/rains and extreme frost? Because that would be easier to deal with than moderate cold and lotsa moisture.

About 10 years ago here they changed the building code disallowing discharge of residential weeeping systems into the sewage system. So in newer areas of the city sump discharge creates streams of water that create ice patches in the streets and back alleys.

My main issue with winter commuting is my brakes freezing below -10°C. I've got hydraulic disks (shimano 485) and it seems some seals in there get too stiff in cold and after a few applications the pads start rubbing hard enough to noticeably slow me down. I've tried flushing the brakes with different fluid but nothing changed. Is it a common problem with hydraulics or is that just my brakes that are faulty? I've never owned another disks so I can't tell.

I just upgraded from hy/rd to fully hydraulic set up on my commuter. The hy/rd were a disaster in every way. I've also had plenty of problems with mechanical brake cables freezing during winter. Based on the comments I've heard from others who have hydraulic brakes I'm expecting better winter performance from the hydraulic system.

They were also super cheap for how good they are and being cycling gloves. I paid under 30€ for them. Love the rubbery grips in the fingers as they really help with handling the controls even though they aren't the most dexterous gloves.

I use my cheap CX bike for this type of thing, covers over my shoes, regular socks, thermal underwear, pants and then windbreaker pants, 3-4 layers with a windbreaker jacket, good winter cycling hat hat, 2 sets of thin gloves with the outer being windbreaking, scarf for the face and some clear safety glasses to block the wind and snow.

I had tektro aurigas whose seals froze up to point where the oil just leaked out.

Been riding several winters with basic shimano mech discs with no issues (BR-M495 i think). Just get ones where you can adjust both pads without moving the wire (so the leverage stays correct).

wut guys, not him, but the yearly average temp on that graph for Chicago is 3.13C ... the average for Moscow is 2.1C. That's 1C different.

December and Jan, chicago actually has a lower average low(??), -8.1C and Moscow is -7.6C.
Jan is -10.8C average low in Chicago, and Moscow is -9.1C

The daily mean is a bit lower in Moscow but not by much.

I have no idea why anyone has an ego about the weather they're riding in. You guys don't really ride very much anyway lol no offense

The average highs are 5 degrees apart. Average low doesn't mean much because it's during the night when no one is out. Chicago is also much further south than Moscow which means longer days during the winter months.

Think about it, the longer the sun is down, the colder it gets. So that's literally right as the sun comes up. The high comes when it's been at it's highest for the longest, which would be like 5pm, right after it's started to go down for a while

3. Since a bike only reaches 1/160th of the energy cars end up doing, you don't need studs unless you hit actual ice
4. They just go slow on MTB tires, since you don't take new grip on each step, you basically got more grip than with boots.

no they dont. many of them are still using the original tires that came with the bike that have cracks on the sides and the tread is almost gone too. but maybe they can do it because the usual winter bike rider weights much less than me so the ice walls arent so hard to drive over and the wheels do not go through the snow to the road/ice.. the few obese people that i have seen here ride bikes only when its summer.

Are most of you talking about commuting or actually doing 2-3 hours rides in -5c?

I did a winter of training in -10, -5 type days and it sucked so fucking bad. Wind chill on descents in -5c is fucking brutal on hands, feet and dick.

The yearly average means jack shit. Look at monthly averages. In November thru February. That's what matters. And moscow isn't that cold. Look up average temperatures of edmonton and winnipeg and compare those to chicago.

Gearing up for my first winter commuting.

I had a very wet and cold ride into work today. The waterproof gear kept the water out. The water resistant gloves soaked through, but I got them dry enough for the ride home.

RIP in peace my feet. Totally soaked. Fenders helped keep the vast majority of the water off, but enough got through to soak the shoes and socks. I am not finding much in the way of a solution. I have wool socks, but they don't prevent soaked shoes. I won't switch from my toe clips to a clip-less system. What can I do keep my shoes dry or find truly waterproof shoes that work with toe clips?

got some covers for use with toe clips last year - company was called lone peak i think, tho not seeing them online now.
basically a loose "cup" of cordura that attached to pedal via velcro and the toe sclip strap threaded through it - useful to stay a bit drier and took the edge of wind but still got cold feet.
i'd second the suggestion for dropping a mudflap at the front as low as you can - amazing the amount of water that comes of that.

Barring that you could fashion some overshoes with some plastic and elastic. Just design it so they only cover the top of your shoe and it shouldn't get super sweaty or soaked.
Also considering extending your front mudguard with some bodge flaps.
