>>1122080I missed a Greyhound bus home one dark & rainy night so I figure I would try to hitchhike back. The rain fell hard & what few cars I saw none stopped. Finally this one car slowly rolled up next to me. Gratefull I jumped in and shut the door. We started moving again & by this time a low fog had settled in with the heavy rain. Wiping the rain from my face I turned to thank the driver and was shocked to find NO ONE IN THE DRIVERS SEAT.
As my mind tried to comprehend the situation we were rolling towards a cliff off the side of the road. At the last moment a disembodied arm reached in thru the open drivers window from the darkness outside and adjust the steering thus saving me from imminent doom.
This went on for a while. The car rolling slowly at a leisure pace, other cars driving by us. Each time a curve or obstacle showed up, that disembodied arm would magically appear & steer us to safety. There was no sound or anything.
After a while it became too much and as luck would have it I saw a light up the highway. This was my chance so I bolted from the ghostly quiet car and ran for the light. Turned out to be a tavern. I was breathless by the time I burst in thru the door and ordered a drink to calm myself down.
The bartender noticing the fearful look on my face asked me if I saw a ghost. In fact I think I had, I told him. I recounted the silent driverless car in the night and the disembodied arm that would appear out of the darkness and steer me to safety.
Just then the tavern door opened up and 2 very wet guys staggered in, obviously exhausted. One saw me at the bar and pointed me out to his friend and said, "Hey LeRoy, there's the jerk who wouldn't help us push the car to the gas pumps!"
