I know plenty of people commuting on bicycles with similar mindset and their bikes are fucking horrible, squeaky, loud, skipping gears, not having access to half of the gears or not having gears at all, dropping chains, racks and baskets that flap on the wind, wheels bent like you kicked the spokes, brakes either rubbing or not working at all
And all these noises man. It would drive me crazy.
One of those people is my father. He asked me to come on the weekend and replace his brake pads. Ended up having to dissasemble the entire bike. I haven't seen a rear derailleur so caked up in grime that It genuinely refused to move. And he commutes only to work (in the city).
I have a 30 year old Hercules with SACHS pentasport IHS and a 1970s commie made Romet Jubilat that was my mother's First Communion gift. Both beat up, but work fine. Preventive maintenance is better than having your bike shit the bed halfway through.
