Tell me. Why the fuck do bike wheels range from a lowly $20 a wheel for chink shit then the next step up goes to >$200 / per wheel. When automotive wheels dont even have such a crazy leap. Steel wheels are $50 a piece and lightweight alloys from reputable manufacturers go for less than $300, for the goood shit.

Because car wheels are much simpler and easier to produce. What makes you think they should cost more than bike wheels? Because they use more material?

Chink shit is cheap because it's made in China, stuff made in other countries is more expensive to make at the same quality and only gets more expensive when you add better materials and higher quality manufacture and quality control.

1. labor
Since bike wheels can not be reasonable made with cast aluminium, but have to be hand build wich costs money.
2. complexity
Bike wheels are significantly more complex than car wheels due to spokes, hubs and the fact that they already include their bearings
3. materials
Low end to midrange bike wheels are made from special aluminium alloys, high strenth steel and more.
High end bike wheels are made from carbon fiber.

TL;DR
If you would build a car wheel like that, it would be much lighter and much more expensive as well, but lack latheral strenth.
If you would cast bike wheels out of aluminium, they would be too heavy.

though wire wheels for a car will be several grand for a set and need to be tuned every few thousand miles.

why are there no mid range alloy bicycle wheels?

Cast- or forged aluminium is not suited for structures as fine as bicycle spokes.
Although you could cast a wheel for a bike, it would be pretty heavy.

The alloy rim with steel spokes is the best compromise for mid range wheels since it is lightweight and not too expensive.

You can get shimano R500s for $100-150 a pair. And those are good quality wheels. Not super light, not super stiff, but reliable wheels.

That is the issue with composite materials like carbon, they can only be made by hand so far since laying down the rovings is not reasonable possible with robots.
The material itself isn´t that expensive, it is mostly the labor.

The bearings involved in Bicycle wheel hubs have way less tolerances and need to be more specifically machined as opposed to milled rims. If you build your own wheels it comes out in the wash.
