What happened? Where did the seaplanes go? All that seems to be left is shitty and less reliable floatplanes...

The US-2 has a huge range and could be used to reach remote islands that don't have airports.

Like for example, St Helena has an airport now, but Tristan de Cunha doesn't (and probably never will). Using the US-2 to link it with Cape Town would make sense to me, from a supply, emergency evac, and tourism perspective.

it was pretty sketchy since the plane makes so much rattling and racket. Overall it was a good experience though. The plane is very very bumpy too and comfort is nonexistent. It's almost like being on a ship in rough seas.

They figured it out.

There's an account from an E190 pilot that the sheer wasn't a problem for the aircraft. Modern systems can account for it once you know what you're dealing with.

It is unusable to the original airlines that bid for the service with pilots not familiar with such situation and using the 737-800 aircraft.
As soon as other airlines with more experienced pilot and a more suitable aircraft step in, the situation immediately become non-problem.

Depends how bad the storm is. They're amphibious, so they can be ramped out and tied down or hangared if the storm is bad enough. It's also a fucking airplane, so if you know the weather's coming (i.e. a hurricane) you could just crank up and GTFO before it gets there.

One trick I was taught to do if you're beached out in the boonies in a float plane and a nasty storm comes over the horizon, is to pump water into the float lockers to weigh the airplane down and hold it on the beach.

Seaplanes vanished because they're too limited. Few were built that could handle landing on solid ground. Also, floatplanes are immensely cheaper to produce. Most small aircraft can be retrofitted easily to a floatplane, whereas many seaplanes were unique top-to-bottom.

Interestingly, the AN-42 has two small turbojets underneath the main engines that help with takeoff. None on the Be-200, though.

Only for anything less than kaspian sea monster size. Ground effect clearance is a function of wing size, which is why really viable sizes are more aeroship class, but nobody will shell out for such a huge prototype.
