Pretty sad and wasteful. In downtown LA Ive seen rows of pay-bikes to rent, and have only seen like 1 rider using them. I dont get why they just auction them off instead.

It a way China provides a glimpse into a world of unrestrained libertarian capitalism. Entrepreneurs do shit without any regard for regulations, and it snowballs out of control until authorities try to reign it back in.

Once the government has collected abandoned ones I don't think the owners would be willing to come forward to claim them out of fear of getting their asses beat. I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of them were "pedaled" to various individuals in bulk as part of a get rich scheme. All kinds of shady investment scams in China that go to elaborate lengths to appear legitimate.

Electric lock
Per "owner", these aren't individual bikes. These are all bikes being deployed by specific companies with dedicated design and have their companies' logo and color painted on it. Most cities nowadays also require these companoes to register with the government so there're nothing illegal for it.

As for the financial plan, there's no secret that those bike companies does not actually care about their bike even if they're getting thrown away, all they want are just users' deposit so they can reinvest into projects with 10 or 20% p.a. return. Who would care about actually renting a bike for like 1 yuan an hour compared to 500 yuan deposit and potential 20% p.a. return? If things go south and those risky investment failed then they can simply burst the company say it can't withstand competition

I heard that the companies investing are mobile micro transactions companies like WeChat and Alipay. There's more money in the transaction and future transactions using a specific app than for actually using bikes.

How would that deposit thing work anyway? Isn't it returned when you return the bike?

How do the locks work? I've heard some open by sending you a code for a mechanical lock via phone but then how do they know you finished? Are all equipped with GPS and if any are how are they powered to broadcast the GPS location? I can't imagine a battery lasting that long.

Code is probably calculated based on the time and the bike id. The system could be designed that the code or numerous codes are valid within a certain time period of it being generated. I don't think any of them have GPS or any sort of communication back to the operator. Just an electronic lock with a solar recharged lithium cell.

They're GPS equipped (since you need to be able to locate them in the app). I believe there is a small solar panel on the bike to power that. To check out a bike, you scan a QR code on the back or enter the code printed on the bike into the app. When you're done, you manually pull a lever on the locking device to engage the shackle through the rear wheel.

At least in the US (Seattle), these types of dockless bikeshares don't take a deposit, just your credit card number (although they give out codes for free rides like they're going out of style).

Japan had donated their old bikes to medical workers, students and villagers across south asia and africa

Well in Japan it's the NGOs (red cross, unicef, etc.) that lead the initiative. I guess china could score some good boy points by cooperating with these NGOs and do the same

You need to look into china's past as to why they do government grants and spending, but basically it's because chinese people really feel grateful to the state since before it they had 10 years of total war with the Japanese and a civil war between the nationalists and the commies simmering at the same time. Civilians got fucked, and because there were lots of refugees and such, the state popped in to support them and so it's been culturally ingrained.

Africans don't look after things, since the next truck will come along with another gibmedat bike in it. And even if there isn't another truck with more bikes, they don't even care. They'll grind the bike up and when it's not usable they won't even look back and think about how life was better with the bike.

I guess different country have different pressing need? Literal shitholes like burundi, south sudan and drc/zaire need food. Period. Countries like zambia and uganda, where famine is more less sorted out, the second most pressing need is access to basic healthcare. Countries like Botswana and Rwanda, where they have basically settled out most, if not all the basic need of their people (primary healthcare and education, access to amenities like water and electricity), naturally the next step is how to improve upon the economy beyond depending on the primary sectors

African bike gibe programs work best when ruggedized, purpose-built bikes are donated rather than shipping over boatloads of BSOs.

Better still when they're manufactured locally with local labor.

Any computer-related jobs are most easily outsourced via network and least location dependent, so it could be argued that teaching them computer related skull could give them best access to the benefit of globalized job market.

Used japanese mamachari is built like a tank and can survive the harshest of abuse without going full rugged. As for china-made bike, they're pretty mixed bag (mostly bad because china being china), but flying pigeon classic black bike is pretty sturdy. I think countries like Ethiopia assembled them under license
