Help Brake Adjustment

The cable keeps pulling out of my lever. The lever has a swiveling HOOK that holds onto the cable-end barrel thing. I don't know if the hook is bent, but it keeps slipping out as I'm trying to adjust the gap at the pads.

No idea what brand brakes I have, Not the ones in the picture though.

It's C. a Mountain Bike Cable, on a MTB, and Im having the issue on the front brake, because I just replaced the pads. The rear brake is the same and works perfectly fine. Ive fiddled with the front a lot over the years.

hm ok, i'd guess there is some friction in the cable run somewhere. So when you depress the lever, the cable end comes out with it, and then when the lever return spring returns the lever, the cable stays behind. Normally the spring tension from your brakes calipers would keep tension on the cable and its head would stay in the lever, returning with it, but the inner cable is snagging somewhere due to friction exceeding the spring tension of the caliper, so its slipping out of the lever instead of returning with it.

If you unbolt the cable from the brake caliper, you should be able to feel friction somewhere. You could try oiling the cable at the entry/ exit points of the outer, but it's probably just time to replace them. Increasing the spring tension of your brakes could be a fix too.

I had to read and re-read this several times to understand, and it completely makes sense. Maybe ~1/2" behind the cable, there was a minor kink, it may interfere a bit. Will it be okay to spray WD40 with a straw in the cable housing? I have 3 in 1 and bike specific oil too.

haha yea sorry i could have said that simpler. Any of those would be fine, i'd use the chain oil. If it's kinked where it passes inside the outer cable, you'll need to replace it.

You're the man, man. It is kinked far back, but its working better now. So I just buy MTB brake cables and cable housing? Are there specific lengths?

Yeah. There are diff lengths but front (short) & rear (long) is generally all that matters.
Use a bicycle specific cable tool to cut the cables & housing, file or angle grind the housing ends smooth then use a scriber/awl/pointy thing to open up the hole. Make sure the inner glides through.
