Sup /n/,any rando here?

I have little experience in long distance cycling but i want to focus on endurance cycling for the next 2 years.

I m close friend of a good framebuilder and im now gethering some ideas to make a nice endurance/audax bike from the scratch, for the next audax season and maybe the PBP 1200km challenge.

Don't get meme'd too much, any decent bike is good for long distance as long as is comfortable and have enough tyre clearance, you don't need lugged steel, 650b wheels and other rando meme stuff.

You really don't need a heavily specialized bike for brevets, I rode my first on pic related just fine and I was obese in July. Swapping out the 52/42 crank to a 46/30 would be a welcome change for grades >10%, but otherwise bike is fine. I had a football sized handlebar bag for snacks and incidentals and a ziploc bag alligator clipped to the stem for the cue sheet, everything else was in my jersey pockets.

I agree with this sentiment, I'd rather have light tires and possibly need to stop to fix a flat than have to haul heavy shits for at least 200km. If you're off your bike your legs are resting, heavy slow tires will only make you work harder longer. That's just how I see things, Gatorskins will be fine if you want to use them.

For a Rando/Audax... which of the following bikes would be better? Ask for any info I failed to include below and it shall be given.

1) Specialized Allez with carbon fork, ultegra wheels, rear pannier rack rated up to 15kg mounted to quick release and brake mount, possibility of handlebar bag, limited room for a frame bag unless top tube bag. Usually carry spares and tools in saddlebags. Tyre clearance for 25mm with clip on mudguards. Rim brakes. Group set full ultegra with hollowtech 2 bottom Bracket. 8.2kg unloaded.

2) Voodoo Aizan 29er hardtail. Pannier rack rated to 25 kg (but could replace with stronger one), possibility for handlebar bag, room for frame bag, hydraulicdisc brakes, 32 spoke wheels. Saddle bag for spares. Square taper sealed bottom bracket. 13.6kg unloaded.

not a randofag, I just do boring old touring. I used to ride a ~25lb steel frame bike with 35mm tires. It was the sweet spot for comfort and speed for distance riding. Then, I was hit by a car and got a bunch of screws in my spine. Basically I now cannot reach drops, I use jones bars, and I have slowly moved towards wider tires for better vibration damping so my screws dont fall out. After a bunch of trial and error I now ride a fargo with 27.5x2.8 tires. This is by far the most comfy bike I have ever ridden. Having said that, it is slow as fuck. Granted, I was hit by a car, was immobile for a long time, gained weight and had a pretty bad opiod addiction, but even after a full season of riding still slow af, ~12mph avg. Before I got the fargo, I popped a rigid fork on my XC bike and it was very similar, even on 2.1. From my previous experience I would say 25mm is a little too thin, as I said 35 was my sweet spot, but for distance in general rotational weight is the enemy. My fargo and my touring bike actually weigh the same, but the fargo frameset is about 2lb lighter, the difference being made up in the wheels.The difference when peddling is stark. You might be better off looking for an older used bike and using the savings to get a nicer, lighter wheelset. On my old touring bike I switched out the standard 700c (I want to say alexrim) wheelset for a mid range DTswiss mtb wheelset and it was perfect. Saved 300g on the wheelset, and since I could actually get tires to bead right on the rim, I saved another couple on the tubes, those wheels were much tougher to boot.

You're fine as is for a 200 or 300k, a dyno hub is good for anything 400+ so you're not burning through a dozen batteries riding at night.

Bruh what's even the point of building a custom rando bike at that point. You basically just building a nice plain ol' road bike.

You want cushy high volume tires without increasing the outer diameter of the tire too much, as that would compromise tight road-ish frame geometry. Fenders because getting wet sucks.

You want your stuff where you can get at it without stopping. You want your stuff on the fork so the tail doesn't wag the dog when you get out of the saddle to put some power down, and so you can build the frame to be light and responsive - more like a race bike and less like a touring bike.

For tire clearance. Centerpulls are a retrogrouch-only affectation. Dick brakes are an acceptable modern touch but custom dick brake forks that aren't uncomfortably rigid are very difficult to make right.

For an all-day gear range with a tight road cassette.

That's what you should be aiming for if you're building a "randonneur".

If you just want a comfy road bike there's nothing wrong with saying "I want a comfy road bike" but don't go around calling it something that it's not.

If you're not the one building the frame, let your framebuilder choose. Customers who've never touched a welder in their life but still want to pick out the steel based on their internet """""research""""" are the fuckin' worst.

I probably carry more than I need to:
-2 tubes
-patch kit
-tire boots
-frame pump
-single CO2 canister
-three tire levers
-more than necessary multi-tool with any allen key, driver bit, and socket wrench size on my bike
-spare derailleur cable long enough to reach the rear der
-extra contacts
-$50 cash for water/snacks at controls
-credit card
-driver's license
-cellphone
-as many water bottles as I have cages on the bike
-rag for snot and chain handling
-chain tool
-spare headlight
-spare taillight
-assortment of fig bars, candy bars, and clif bar type bars

For cold weather clothes I'm wearing whatever arm/leg warmers, cap, shoe covers, wind vest, or balaclava I usually wear at the start temp, as the day warms up I take off items as needed. I try to drink enough to need to pee about 3-4 times per 200k, and I always refill my water bottles and snack supply at controls or as needed if I'm especially hungry or thirsty for whatever reason.

I can't speak for that product specifically, but anything to add the amount of liquid you can carry will only help. A lot of routes go through pretty rural areas so you might go 30+ miles between gas stations/convenience stores and that's a stretch for a single bottle

If you have the money a TT bike would probably be good for you. Don't limit yourself to UCI goofiness. Get that aero bar goodness to make your energy expenditure more efficient, and carry water and snacks.

Try lightly greasing your stem where it clamps on the steerer and where it clamps on the bars. It might be that creaking. Maybe upgrade your headset (cane creek 40) or switch to a minirack & basket with a bag in it.

Indeed. Strava picks up walking and gps ping pong. Then there's city traffic and ftbc. And I'm hauling 50 kg loads three hours a day. With the ratios for that with my average and peak climbs. 3 x 7 or igh 3 speed because cost effective.

I would guess it's the stem before the headset too, a pound or two more on the handlebars shouldn't make the headset unhappy but I've experienced plenty of creaky threadless stems.

In defense of this dude the last century I did was into a headwind with loaded panniers and they felt like a fuggen windsail even though I was full tucked in them drops it made me real mad I swore I'd framebag it next time
