In a homogeneous society like japan, there was some empathy and a lot of tolerance, which allowed cramming people on. But that's eroded enough that even tokyoites are increasingly intolerant of that crap.

Any other country now lacks both the empathy and tolerance to actually use mass transit effectively. Musk is simply following the trend, like any good marketing man. The end game is self driving personal pods, for those few people who aren't shutins.

He's a moron, places like NYC couldn't function without its transit. When the subway was shutdown for incoming Sandy, no one did anything, everything was closed, no one worked, the city was basically at a standstill. Cars don't work in urban centers, especially like NYC. We put up with the homeless people and urine smells because the network is still essential, albeit it has A LOT of room for improvement. I figure I'll be dead before it looks as nice as some of the other metros ITT, but at least we have one and at least it usually works. I'd rather be delayed on the train by 15 minutes then stuck on any of the clogged inbound routes for hours by car. I suggest anyone wanting to see urban over congestion, walk around lower Manhattan at the mouth of the Holland Tunnel between 4 and 7PM. Sure thing Elon, we definitely need MORE cars in there.

They're still losing money. They're not selling vehicles at a loss, which is a start, but they're also not bringing enough money to even cover their operational costs. It'd be one thing if they were just losing money by blowing cash to expand, but at present they're in the red even if they weren't attempting rapid expansion, which is concerning.
