Hey, resident cager here with not the most riding experience but I still like to lurk- I see a lot of riding stories being retold and the inevitable road raged soccer mom/chad etc encounter comes up. I've gotta ask, level with me guys because I see this a lot, are ya all REALLY 'almost literally dying' as much as you say?

Looking over a cliff at your death is scary. In retrospect, as soon as the tire blew i should have just put the bike down and suffered the road rash. Pretty hard to make that call though.

Most of us aren't literally almost dying every day, but close calls happen more often than I'd like. Usually it's just passing way too close when I'm taking the lane because of some road hazard that would either put me off the bike or require me to come to a near full stop, but I've had a few instances of cars at stop signs trying to jump across the main thoroughfare before I cross the side street intersection, resulting in me nearly t-boning their door. I don't know if they don't see my flashing light as I'm approaching or if they think I'm going much slower than I actually am.

I try to ride very early in the morning to avoid cages being on the road, but it's hard to manage that on weekends when I'm riding 4-8 hours.

lots of stuff that cars drivers don't really have to worry about can injure or kill a cyclist, and people are almost oblivious to the danger they cause
for example, when's the last time someone opened their car door right in front your car? its a common occurrence for cyclists, but not drivers
also, next time you're driving around, look at the bike lanes in your city, i'm willing to bet you have some of the narrow, painted ones
since they're at the very edge of the road, lots of them have gutters which slope down or have grates which can catch your wheels
they're also full of debris like broken glass, sand, gravel and sticks, which isn't a big deal for car tires, but is for some bikes, especially on 23mm tires
and close passes are so common that you get numb to them pretty quick, and almost forget that if the driver had been a few inches further over you'd be dead

my taillight has a really nice setting where its on constantly, and flashes very bright a couple times every second, so you can judge distance but it still catches your eye

LOL, no, you must be new here, to not know it's just usually a meme. I'm not even convinced anyone in here who goes on and on about 'cagers' actually even owns a bike, let alone rides one.

Me, I ride an average of about 200 miles a week, some of it on the 32 miles of paved parkway, closed to motor vehicle traffic (with the exception of rangers, county vehicles, etc) that follows the river, but much of it is also out on surface streets, and roads in remote places (because the parkway is utterly flat, and I need to climb hills, too). In late Fall through early Spring, during the week, I'm out in the dark initially, too, when most would consider it the most dangerous time to be on a bike, even with a headlight and taillight. I think in the 10 years I've been riding this much every week, I can count on the fingers of one hand how many times I've had anything you'd call a 'close call' with a motor vehicle, and that's counting just irate drivers who, for some reason, don't seem to like cyclists. My experience is that so long as you're paying attention to what's going on around you, what you're doing on the bike, and having some common sense in any given traffic situation, you're going to be safe on a bike, and you're not going to have any 'incidents' with motor vehicles. I have a motorcycle and a pickup truck, too, and have been riding motorcycles for a long time as well, so some of my street-smarts on a bike also come from experience staying out of trouble there.

My experience on /n/ has given me the opinion that the 'anti-cager' types here are either just a meme (i.e. shitposting), or if they really believe it, they're the 'bad' cyclists, who don't pay attention, and *cause* trouble on the roads. Probably don't know how to drive, therefore don't really have ingrained instincts when it comes to riding in traffic. Disregard them.

Here's a pro-tip for you: The only person on the road you can control is YOU. Worry about what you're doing instead of expecting everyone else to keep you safe.

If ANYONE lets that get into their head and rattles them, then they either need to get some better bike handling skills and therefore confidence on the roads, or stop riding.
People who ride a bike scared shitless all the time are endangering themselves and everyone around them; they're just as likely to completely lock up and panic when something goes wrong, causing an accident.

Do you live in the city or out in the sticks? You could hit downtown with a football from my apartment, and all of my near misses have happened within 10 miles of the city center. Rural drivers seem to be a lot better at passing, I don't know if it's because they're used to passing farm equipment or what, but I like riding through farm country a lot more because of it.

You're supposed to be as far to the right as is safe to be, not in the middle lane of a three-lane highway. The exception is if you're turning left at an intersection, in which case you should be as far to the right in the turn lane as you can be, and in the right-hand turn lane in a multi-lane left turn lane. The exception to turning (or anything) is: "IS IT SAFE TO DO?". Apply a little common sense. If it's really busy you may need to use a crosswalk at a controlled intersection like you were a pedestrian, so you don't get KILLED. Otherwise you follow the same Rules of the Road that any other vehicle follows. If you don't have a Drivers License then go pick up a Drivers Handbook from your DMV website and study it like you were going to take the written test, learn the Rules of the Road, and *use them*. If you still can't manage to be safe on the roads riding your bike then I suggest you go take a bike skills class somewhere or go ride with the local bike club group rides, they'll teach you by example how to stay safe.

I’ve had two close calls in the last 2 1/2 weeks. I was times in the bike lane, both times, I was getting ready to cross a major intersection, both times, and the driver failed to use a a blinker, both times. If I didn’t have quick reflexes, I would’ve been done. I was on my way to work, but took the L on making it on time to give them a rundown as they tried to speed away down a congested side street only to have me go crazy on them.
Neither of them got out of the car or rolled down their mirror when I told them to. Cagers are all the same: oblivious, entitled pricks with no fucking spine.

I commute by bike and ride for fun on the weekends, I have been able to avoid any serious accidents for several years
I am not afraid to ride, but I am aware of the dangers that are present and just because you aren't doesn't mean there isn't a risk

You are absolutely correct and I avoid the door zone and have not been doored, however I have heard of and seen many people hit by a door
Part of the danger is that the city sometimes builds bike lanes right in the door zone, and new cyclists aren't aware that it isn't safe to ride there
And again, it isn't unreasonable to expect drivers to check their mirror before opening a door, there is no excuse for carelessness

Legally this is true if a bike lane is of substandard width, is blocked, or is full of debris
However, when a bike lane is available, taking the lane tends to anger car drivers to the point of reckless and threatening behavior

On the other hand, in the latter case, if you look both ways at an intersection just before crossing, you're likely to see the idiot running the red light, and stop before entering the intersection. Not like that hasn't happened to me before, too.

In the former case: Again, "shit happens". You can't control everything, and the mindset of "must control everything around me!" will sabotage you and get you into more trouble than it will to *let it go*.

Note that it's absolutely 100% human nature to want to control everything around you -- but it's just not possible, and you either eventually learn to let go of things you can't control, or you live a very frustrated, stressful, unsatisfying life.

Using words like 'cager' in the context of a conversation like this is equivalent to using words like 'nigger' or 'spic' or 'kike' in conversations about social or political issues: it's divisive, it inflames people, and discourages productive discourse because it's divisive and inflammatory. Do you all want to have a real conversation on the subject of cycling safety on public roads, or do you all want to have a bitch-and-bash session against motor vehicles? I have cars come within a foot of me crossing the white line all the time. Sometimes I get idiots threatening me. Make no mistake, I dont go and "take the lane" like I should as I feel that just raises the frustration levels. I have been seriously thinking of carrying a gun lately as I ride through some rough areas.

But that does not excuse the drivers, that does not excuse the city, and ignoring it prevents any chance of improving it
There have been successful bike safety campaigns, and they almost always build on statistical data

I agree that being careful and being aware of what's going on can protect you from probably 99% of crashes
But realize that the person who ran the light, or the person who was speeding, or the person who passed to close is at fault
Don't blame the victim of a crash when they were in the right, blame the person who caused the crash through recklessness

Riding a bicycle anywhere, public roads or not, has risks associated with it, and on public roads those risks include motor vehicles sometimes operated by poor drivers or malicious, aggressive drivers. You either accept the risk(s) or you don't ride a bicycle. End of story. The whole thing is a non-subject, really, doesn't bear even as much discussion as it's had here, because nothing anyone says here changes anything. Threads like this one and similar on 4chan (or anywhere else on the Internet) just become ECHO CHAMBERS for the disaffected, fringe elements, and trolls, turning the so-called 'discussion' into an endless stream of "Me, too!". So there's really no point in even posting a thread like this to begin with. If anyone really wants to do something to mitigate the risks to cyclists from motor vehicle traffic, then you should get involved in your local government, start grass-roots movements to organize cyclists in your area into political action committees, arrange lobbying, get local businesses behind you, and so on, to affect change in your area, fund better infrastructure to provide protected paths and lanes for cyclists, educate drivers about cyclists (so they recognize them instead of just saying "I didn't see him/her, officer!"), rewrite laws to provide for stricter fines and consequences for aggressive drivers, and so on. If you're not willing to get involved in those ways, or you can't get anyone to support your ideas, then you just have to accept the way things are and do what you can to LEGALLY protect yourself on public roads. Crying about so-called 'cagers' and whining about things on the Internet is pointless, stupid, and unproductive, and it's an annoying waste of bandwidth that benefits no one. I say all this AS AN AVID CYCLIST, by the way.

As a commuter I've been both knocked off and doored in the last 2 years, both times in heavy traffic in accidents involving taxis - I don't consider myself particularly unlucky, actually think i was lucky to walk away from both incidents, but imagine that this record, ie something nasty every year or so, is pretty typical for people riding in dense urban centers.

Been riding recreatively for 4 years and all-season commuting to work for 3 years.

Had 6 "almost getting killed" situations so far.
5 of them were me riding on the bicycle path and the drooling amoeba behind the wheel failing to check for cyclists either before turning or before turning right to join the traffic. One time I sperged out so much I got in a fight. I broke his smartphone (which he was talking when he almost hit me) so I considered it a huge victory.
The last one was a truck driver desperately trying to not let me go first. No fucking clue what his problem was but I'm 100% he did it intentionally.

Surprisingly I never got doored.

fuck those paths right next to the road with bushes next to them

Drivers are assholes and some are literally out to kill you. They'll throw shit at you, swerve at you, and in my very special case run over you at a fucking red light.

And then there's no recompense for cyclists. Cagers usually physically and/or legally get away with it. It's people's lives and it's terrible.

Lots of cyclists need to get their shit together. But I haven't seen any that deserve to have their life taken. (Not saying that's not possible, but you'd have to be insane to try shit against a cager.)

Yes to both. But demonizing motorists *as an entire class*, and using some perjorative term for them (the same way you'd say 'niggers') is unrealistic, pointless, immature, and stupid to the point of being just another retarded, meaningless meme.
If you and everyone else in this thread want to just throw memes around and talk like silly children the say so. I'd rather have a real conversation about the subject, and address the actual, real-world problems cyclists can face on public roads.

For starters: If any of you really live somewhere where it seems there's no accountability of motorists when it comes to cyclists on the roads, then I'd suggest you get a Go-Pro and mount it on your handlebars. Then if someone does break the law and/or there's an accident or incident, you have photographic evidence. There's at least one guy on my team who does this and it's come in handy in the past. Local LEOs can't disregard evidence like that. Of course if you're also at fault in some way it's going to be obvious so you'd better be sure you've got your own shit together.
