Nice false dichotomy.
The decision process is simple: Will my speed by hindered unacceptably if I travel on the bike path/lane/footpath. If the answer is yes, use the road. Footpaths are full of pedestrians to harass, so they're right out. Even if the footpath is empty, it's still a no, because you have to give way at each road crossing, which is unnacceptable. Bike paths can be crappy if they're made of standard size concreted slabs, in which case use the road if not too busy. Good sealed bike paths or protected lanes, the choice is obvious.

Road. Unless you're 5 or 6 years old on a bike with tiny little wheels (and likely training wheels), you don't belong on the sidewalk; the sidewalk is for foot traffic.

The SoCal sprawl nightmare has 6 lane "roads" with bike lanes on the side. speed limit: 55mph. Cars go 70mph

And they're just "main roads" not "freeways" It's a fucking nightmare. I stick to bike paths and mountain bikes here
