They do ruin things for everyone else. A few morons weaving through traffic and running reds justifies in some minds licensing, registration, insurance, and plates for all cyclists.

E-bikes and mopeds under 50cc sit in a legal limbo. Legally considered too slow for motor vehicle laws to apply, but they can be hacked to give performance that would make such laws applicable. Put a few idiots on them and the government cracks down.

How do they catch you? I can understand if you go motorcycle speeds without pedaling but wouldn't it be really easy to just use it to help you accelerate from a stop or maintain a reasonable speed?

I don't know what the e-bike laws are in NY but most places where they are legal have an assistance speed limit as well as a power limit. Usually it's about 25km/h or 15/16mph, a speed that's easily bested on flat ground so they motor only comes into play when accelerating or climbing.

Seems like the solution is not to ban e-bikes but to class them as a motorised vehicle. Maybe a new sub-50cc category so there's less registration and insurance requirement but they still need to comply with traffic laws.

That's how it works in Europe. Up to 25 km/h they count as bicycles and up to 45 km/h they count as mopeds, meaning you need insurance, use the road and wear a helmet.
