The winter episode of NHK Cycle Around Japan, the comfiest travel show on tv has just come out this month. You can get it via torrent or on youtube.

I'm pretty jelly, Japan seems to be really nice and every time I read travelers storiers about riding on Japan my desires of riding there increases. I'm a weeb, but I'm more interested in riding through mountains, rice fields and visiting historical places or even riding a mamachari on a comfy city/small village

I went to Japan with my wife last June and we cycled the bridges of Shimanami Kaido. It's only 50 miles in total but you cycle over a bunch of bridges connecting six islands, pretty amazing scenery throughout. I want to go back in the future with touring bikes and see more of Japan, it looks like a great place to ride.

- Not that hard to transliterate between both scripts, so printing both would not bs hard

...and? Was the track all good or not? Was the track closed because it's too hard to traverse by car? Or that it's got roadworks on it (just stop and turn back), or that it's damaged partway (just stop and turn back).
Exploring closed stuff is good fun. The only real reason to avoid (as long as you're prepared to backtrack if you have to) is if it's closed for a biosecurity reason, like there's a disease/ fungus they're trying not to spread. Can solve that by asking locals and it would generally be specifically signposted.

I rode through the japanese alps for 2 weeks last fall. 18k meters, 600km. Was lots of fun. I highly recommend. You need proper cycling skills though.

Their property laws are fucked up, they have no concern or regard for preserving historical buildings, everything gets rebuilt every thirty odd years or so and they don't give a fuuuuuuck about greenbelts.

I never understood why nips are not good at cycling. They are not tall, they have a rich and well populated country, and they have tons of mountains. On my country (Spain), the north provinces every generation provides us with some top riders, and Colombia has many great riders and they are not really rich.
I guess it must be something about culture, something about getting addicted to pachinko or being a cyclist not good enough compared to being another salaryman who works 14h every day.

Did you book hotels/rent your bike on your own? How much did you pay?
I was looking into this a bit last year, mainly guided bicycle tours, and they were pretty damn expensive.
