Weight distribution. The weight of the entire vehicle is distributed into the road surface through nothing other than where the tires touch the ground. If you have too much weight pressing down on too little contact patch, it'll wear the tires quicker, make them more prone to failure, but more importantly very quickly deform the asphalt and either cause ruts or cracks and subsequent potholes in the road.

Old WWII era vehicles were designed around the extremely muddy fields in Europe. Back then, rubber compounds sucked, and the best way was tall skinny tires that dug deep.

Nowadays tires can be safely deflated to lower PSI without rolling off the wheel, and provide more grip with advanced tread design and wiiide tires.

Having more tires/ extra axles is for safely hauling heavy loads. A goven tire-wheel-hub-axle-control arm-spring-shock and section of chassis can only support so much weight. Adding an axle provides greater payload. Like wing area on aircraft.

DOT has safety regulations, and manufacturers dont want to overrate their equipment, and have a truck crash cause it couldn't stop on a steep decline on a wet rainy road , and be responsible for lawsuits.

Unimogs are as overpriced as Jeeps...

Mitsubishi Fuso's supposedly make awesome 4x4 campers for budget builds. Although dont expect much from the little 4 cylinder....

Best options for long term overlanding (Beyond the capabilities of Land Cruisers, needing a camper/motorhome are Ford F-series platforms.

Can a XJ or TJ house 5 friends and accommodate the luxury of shower and toilet for a week through MOAB? Youre missing the point. That rig is for TOWING an off road toy. It itself is not the toy, but can get much further out than a conventional RV.

I'm pretty fucking sure that paved roads lead to Moab, and it makes no fucking difference whether your bedroom on wheels is parked two miles further in the bush or not. Its not for towing a toy.
Its for a sport called overlanding.
Its for driving from panama to alaska via mostly logging roads.
I am crossing into mexico this week in a 4x4 van to spend the winter doing this.
Camping alone on remote beaches is very rewarding and you cant get there without a serious offroad rig.
