I got this bike last year for a deal and after an injury I have been riding it quite a bit around los angeles. I ride for fun and mostly at night.

What upgrades would you make to this bike if you had the cash and wanted to learn about fixing and upgrading bikes. I am not looking to replace it at the moment.

How far are your rides? Flat bars are comfy, but so are the top hoods on drops, but theyre usually too narrow for my shoulder width.... For long rides youll appreciate drops. (like, over ~ 45 minutes or so

I would go as wide of tire as the fork and frame allows. I like speed, but I love soft cushioned rides more.

Upgrade 1: remove one tire and measure the inner width of your rims. Compare to this chart from Sheldon Brown. Replace the stock tires with a high TPI replacement tire in the largest width your rims can safely support. Watch out though, some tires cannot clear your frame. Measure the frame as well before ordering. Many here would suggest Schwalbe Marathon Supremes for the best non competitive 35mm tire

Second, install fenders
Third, pinned flat pedals
Fourth, brake pad upgrades
Fifth new saddle
Sixth, alternative handlebars

Usually from 1-2 hours. I like to ride around and explore the city at night. I have been noticing my upper back and ass hurt a lot after longer rides.

Yes but if you're going for a different bar shape you will need to mess with your stem. Best to have a small collection of cheap ones until you find the right length and angle of rise

The geometry of the frame is designed for a flat bar. The derailleurs, gears, shifters, brakes and levers are all incompatible with drop bars, you'd have to replace nearly everything but the frame and wheels.
If you want to make changes that deep, just sell it as it is and start over instead of sinking money into sub-optimal solutions.

Two hours on flat bars on the road can be uncomfortable. Check out "Alt mountain bike bars" on Google. There are hundreds to check out. Most are just swept back in various ways. It's a more natural position for your wrists. Ergon grips are great though, cheaper upgrade than replacing your handlebars

For back and ass pain you're gonna want to start looking into bike fit and posture. It's a black hole. More art than science. Try different handlebars, stems, saddle fore/aft settings, and different saddles. Eventually, if you're paying attention and experimenting, you'll figure out what works for you

You have a 3x9 drivetrain but hydraulic brakes. The options for road bars with that set up is....

1. Hydraulic road levers + 9 speed bar ends
2. Gevenalle version of above
3. Stitching to mechanical disc

Bare minimum you're spending $300 on it. At that point it might be smarter to sell what you have and buy a road bike

Endlessly recommending jones-baranon, do you actually ride a jones bar? I have met 2 people with them irl. One guy had just got them and didn't like them much. The other aussie guy on a surly troll hated them so much he cut away the front bit. I can kind of see the point for giving you an extra bar for accessories, but doing that ruins their potential for a tt-esque position. It's also visual clutter obscuring your vision of your front wheel and the ground, and as someone who often rides with a basket, that is not nothing. Nor is an albatross style bar, same main positions, with no front bit, ergonomic for long rides, and those are extremely elegant, which a jones bar is not.

I just really fail to see the worth, from an ergonomics perspective, of the front bit. A Jones Bar to me is a meme bar for people that want to have a meme bike with a million things strapped to their handlebars. And the albatross bar shape it's based on, belongs on a relaxed cruiser bike, not a serious tourer or a road machine.

If i had to tour with flat bar controls, i'd want a flat bar & TT clipons. A lot of people run that and i think it makes far more sense.

I don't get why you can't see the appeal of it, you have a wide swept back main position for good control and comfort, a forward narrow position for getting more aero, and then the mid narrow position for a mixture of aero and comfort. A flat bar with clip-ons give you two of those positions but with different angles and arm support. I wouldn't say either is outright superior to the other, it's all just personal preference.

honestly you've got to stop endlessly recommending jones bar if you've never ridden them.
i got pretty drunk hanging out with the aussie guy and i don't remember his points very well but he vehemently hated it, hated being memed into it and he had hacksawed it up while on tour

I've never recommended them. All I'm doing is countering whoever said he doesn't see the value in a Jones bar. The reasons to dislike it, like almost every other bar design, are down to personal preference.

Uh, the guy who says this won't work is knowledgeable but also slightly wrong.

The link and pic are shimano 2x9 sora, which is compatible in all kinds of ways. He's right about the geo though, your stack and reach might be pretty off for road bars but you could overcome it with stem adjustment/replacement, saddle fore/aft...maybe. Depending on your body.

Still, you'd have to go to mech brakes to use the p good current sora shifters. So maybe not 300, but you'd need shifters, bar, stem (prob), brakes, cables, housing. I like trp spyres but I will boldly go ahead and say that other single sided mech disks are ok for budget bikes.

OP: Check out a nice file-tread tire like Panaracer Pasela, or its variants from Soma Fabrications, Compass Cycle, etc.
For drop bar conversions, you'll need a different-size stem (go with cheap Kalloy/Dimension/XLC, etc.) and drop bar brake levers that can operate hydraulic discs. Shimano offerings are good, but expensive, and require an 11-speee cassette due to indexing. I don't think you'd need to change derailers, though.
