Steel Frame Brazing

howdy guys, anybody want to talk about making steel frames?
pic related is my baby
this is the only frame i've ever made and i want to make more, does anyone else have any experience they can offer?
or, if I'm the closest thing we have to an expert, does anyon have any questions for me about the process?

i did a terrible job clearing off flux, the chemical agent used to indicate temperature and allow for flow of liquid metal. this impacted my paint job, which was never going to be professional lol

the pphotos don't do it justice but there's a decent color gradient between purpley-pink and orange, that looks much better in real life, on all the lugs and brazeons.

for most of the brazing i used a #0 or #2 torch tip, but for the BB I had to use a rosetta tip, which is much hotter and uses much more gas (and is thus way more terrifying when you fuck up and get the torch too close to the lug and the torch goes out with a tremedous cracking sound)

the frame geometry is loosely inspired by the Fuji Jari, though the tubes are shaped different and the angles are slightly slackened because that's just how things panned out.

after applying a basecoat of galvanizing zinc to help protect against rust.
still have to clear coat it.

one of the first things you do is cut the tubes so that they cup eachother inside the lugs. this makes stronger bonds. but it also takes a bit of taking apart and putting back together before you start melting metal.

this was towards the end of the process, and was a huge pain in the ass. the rear triangle is much more difficult then the front, and i have no idea how i'm gonna do it without a jig.

anywhere you see copper is where i fucked up and got the brass too hot, allowing it to split into constituant metals. anywhere you see black is where I fucked up and got the steel too hot, resulting in ugly charring (and if you realllly fuck up it can inhibit the forming of bonds.)

and like if having a shit paint job keeps this from getting stolen then so be it lol

I used brass for all the lugs and silver for all the brazeons. brass takes the higher temperature, so doing the braze-ons after in silver prevents heat damage to the tubes i think? I'm not exactly an expert.

for where the seat stays meet the seat tube lug, we cut the seat stays diagonally, slapped them to a flat piece of metal and brazed them on so that there wouldn't be exposed metal tubing which is dangerous for you AND your bike.

i wanted to do a dropout with a replaceable hanger just in case but didn't get around to it in time. not too mad though, cause i could run SS or IGH on the frame no prob, with or without a chain tensioner.

good god your brazing is ugly. did you have any guidance from someone with experience? how much did you practice before hand? what flux are you using?

I've been riding a lugged frame i silver brazed for over two years. based on your brazing i'd have recommended silver. i practiced fillet brazing with bronze, then moved to lugged and had trouble getting penetration, silver was really easy coming from bronze. you don't even need 1 troy oz of silver to make a frame with investment cast lugs.

also, come the fuck on, you couldn't be bothered to clean up the flux? use a chisel and hammer to break it apart, then switch to something water soluble. gasflux paste fluxes are the best in my experience.

It was a class at a local makerspace in Boston. They also wanted you to take an intro to brazing class if you had no experience (like me)
Total cost for those two classes was about 2k.
All the materials i used were paid for by the class's cost.
The class was actually last year, it was 3~5hours a week from jan thru april i think?

No idea what we were using flux wise, though i know it was the right kind for the joints.
Yeah I'm not exactly an expert though to be fair most of the brazing ive done is literally just that frame.
I'm planning on buying an oxy-map torch to do more silver brazing, partly just because watching it whet to the steel is super satisfying.
