Rate my cop today:

Centurion Turbo with all original parts, apparently almost never ridden. Teeth on the cassette and crank show almost no wear. Gorgeous Dia Compe New Grand Compe brakes and full Suntour Superbe Pro group. Tange 1 tubing. Nearly no marks in the paint.

One of the rare times I've ever found a used bike in my size.

Downtube are the best shifters. I've been commuting and riding on non indexed downtube shifters for the last like five years. It's so much less hassle than having to deal with indexed brifters.

I'm. Saying indexed brifters have a place. And several of my bikes have them. But for survivability and pure not having to worry about fucking around with them. Non indexed are great. I don't have to mess with them coming unindexed or short shifting or anything. It, to me, makes the bike more durable and less prone to failure.

No, downbeat shifters are not the best for several reason I won't bother explaining it. The brakes look pretty good. No surface rust and good placement. I would just encourage you to lubricate any points of contact.

Dude didn't really know what he had or what the market would support. He also had it listed on Facebook market place for over a month, but in the wrong category. It wasn't listed under bikes, he didn't even mention bike in the description. The only was I was able to find it is because I love Centurion bikes and I happened to search for Centurion in the title. So I was probably the first person to contact him about it and he jumped on my offer. He originally asked $200 for it.

Interestingly the rims and tires aren't original, but they are period correct.

Everything had it's niche man. Downtube friction shifts just work so you can get to work. If you don't see any reason for friction at all I can promise you have never used a bike for work or to get to work. Also why would you go through the trouble of upgrading if its already works. I own a touring bike with frictions and anything that can make your day marginally easier is well worth it. There is nothing worse than just getting in the zone then having to stop for maintenance when all you want to do pound out some miles.

Ive been cycling for recreation and commuting for several years now. 2 of my 6 bikes are friction.

Friction is inefficient and compromises safety (especially if you're talking about downtube or drop end) . Maintenance is a non issue if you're vigilant, perform your own maintenance/repairs, or do your research (when purchasing, selecting bikes/components etc).

One of my daily driver bikes is a friction so I'm not being an asshole here, I just want people new/unfamiliar to cycling to be informed consumers - that's all.

You can make a case for stem-shifters compromising safety, as using them moves your center of gravity up and to one side.

Here's the final picture of my last bike before she gave up the ghost.

Got some Kool Stop pads, Cinelli Grey bar tape, Crane Creek gum hoods, a new KMC chain, and tubes set to be delivered tomorrow. My task for today is to clean up the bike real good. Remove the components. Wash and lube as necessary.

Last component need for her to be ride ready is cables and housing which should be here Friday. I'm excited

For down tube: Shifting center of gravity forward and to the side. Manageable if you're slow or on flats but less than optimal at high speed or while ascending/descending.

Whether you're doing stem, down tube or bar end, you're moving your hands to shift thus forfeiting some level of control

Friction shifting is based on maintain tension along a line with the use of some mechanism. The friction utilized to maintain this tension is not as secure or static as the ratcheting systems you see in modern day shifters. Whether you notice or not, there is some level of "slip" that occurs with derailleurs utilizing friction shifters. To make it short: force is applied unevenly to a chain leading to greater wear, more stress, and greater probability of hardware failure.

Friction shifting will never be as accurate, precise and quick as modern day integrated shifters. This results of this is sub par performance regardless of environment, greater wear on the drivetrain, and greater potential for injury under high-torque scenarios (i.e. shifting while climbing).

If one must use friction shifters due to cost or to keep with tradition/fashion, go with top-mount thumb shifters. Otherwise, convert stem/bar-end/downtube to integrated (if your bicycle allows).

I don't know how you ride bikes but when I'm on the hoods or on the drops my hand goes straight down to the downtube shifter, more towards the center of gravity than anything. You're just too stubborn to figure it out.

Yeah most people who run downtube or bar ends not only don't lose their balance, but don't even have to think when they shift. There's a learning curve and I think the integrated shifter guys don't realize that there's way easy shifting on the other side

No. I'm not stubborn about anything - again, 2 of my 6 bikes are friction, I use a friction as a daily commuter in environments with a couple of 3-18% gradients. I perform my own maintenance and have a background in engineering. I understand that people develop a muscle memory with friction but it still doesn't detract from the fact that they're inefficient and create a greater risk to safety. Everything I'm saying is based on available data, physics, and theoretical models.

I'm not shitting on people that use and enjoy them, I just think its a disservice to call them "the best" as OP did or to advice friction over integrated. Do what you love but don't be stupid.

I take 1 hand off the bars for a second or two to shift, then just keep going, there's no danger riding one handed for a bit, especially since I only need my right hand to shift, so my left is always ready with the front brake. On a really long ride I like to rest my hands in turn and stretch my fingers out every now and then, and drink some water, and I'll just use 1 hand for 5 minutes or so letting the other one rest, I've never had a problem doing that. You don't need to be in maximum control mode all the time, especially on a road bike

...What's your point? So is indexed shifting on pretty much all derailleur drivetrains? Excluding stuff on cable loops (like Rohloff hubs), and electronic shifting, I can't think of any even semi-mainstream shifting system that couldn't be described that way.

Got it mostly all assembled with no issue. Need to wait for an order for a SR2 tool to pull off the freewheel. Going to home depot tomorrow because I am missing my 15mm socket...and the cranks have a 15mm bolt. Go figure.

Gonna repack all bearing grease and polish up the chrome bits. Wash and wax the frame and get it in tip top shape and ready to ride in no time.

Looked further into the parts and all that.

I'm so confused bike has no signs of use. As far as I could tell the original pads and tires were on it with no signs of wear. The brakes, which I usually find to be give signs of use in caked on brake dust are 100% clean.

It's essentially a NOS bike it looks like.

No its not. Derailleurs are easy to understand. Already did multi month tour on STI shifters without one instance of failure. Of course, were both arguing about anecdotes now meaning that you don't have any valid response.

Around 180K feet of climb accounted, I did not log 1/3rd of all rides last year which easily bumps my total feet of climb to over 200K.

By the way, very strong argument. I'm sure that focusing on how many feet we climbed, our total mileage, our watts per pound, etc is really a good basis to determine who is right and who is wrong.

If you read what I had said you would understand why stems are preferred over bar end or down tube.

Every square taper crank I've ever pulled with hex head bolts has been 14mm, what's the country of origin for bikes you work on? Mine are mostly all from Japan, but that Cannondale in my attached image had 14mm bolts as well.

I hadn't thought about it but I might look into it. The one on there now spins and engages well. I was just gonna lube up the hub when I pulled the freewheel and probably drop some oil on the freewheel once it's back on the bike to quiet it down.

The guy described it as "taking out the trash", after getting it I noticed the derailleur hanger threads are stripped, but ehh I could just use it as a single speed. I'm wondering if his brifters/rear derailleur were stolen and he just feels it's not worth it to fix now.
