The Purple Extension sucks,I don't like it. Personally I feel like it should be elevated. The LA Metro is sickening, its horrible. The light rail isn't that terrible.

Would set an example though if LA of all cities managed to shift mentionworthy passenger volume onto efficient public transport. If LA can do it, there's no excuse for anyone else not to.

why exactly should it be elevated? It's planned to go down one of LA's busiest surface streets. It's perfect for a classic subway.

LA will do it because they're making the investment. By 2020 the Regional Connector will be built, as will run-through tracks at Union Station. Both will make actually using the trains to get around feasible as the network won't be segmented into isolated pieces. Likewise, transferring from Metrolink to Metro trains will be easy.

By comparison, look at the mess BART and Muni have up in SF. Neither connect well to regional rail (BART doesn't do timed transfers at Richmond or Milbrae, and the Coliseum station has a "youth" problem) and they don't go places people want to go.

Because it means no property takes have to happen above ground? That's a massive benefit that cuts down on litigation issues. It also lets the city easily tie in other subway extensions (the proposed pink line to WeHo, or a Sepvuelda subway) into the main line without having to blaze a new path above ground.

Aversion to public transit, especially the metro rail, has been decreasing in the Los Angeles area for some time. You actually see middle-aged white people (who dress middle class or upper middle class) on the light rail these days.
