>>1150949>1986ish>Mexican railways NdeM is put under control of the new ministry for transport (from this time on regular locos began sporting the blue livery)>decides to put some money into the railways for once bc bubble economy>line from Mexico city to Querétaro, a medium city about a three hour drive north-northeast of Mexico city, is to be electrified as a sort of pseudo-high-speed-train (tho compared to the shitty speed in general it prolly was high-speed kek)>electrification works start>NdeM buys a shitload of E60s, largest single order ever, but only a few ever even get delivered to mexico, becaaause:>economy goes to shit as happens every couple of years in Mexico>electrification works stagnate>all the way to the 1990s>all this time the locos that had been delivered are standing in their cuckshed>come 1994, finally the govt scrapes together a few bucks to finish electrification>electric train opens, great success!>buuuut just 4 years later, in 1998, the government decides to privatize the highly deficitary and inefficient railways>passenger service is gradually shut down between 1998-99>dunno when the electric train to Querétaro stopped running, but it was no later than 1999.>Now defunct NdeM sells the not very new but lightly used electric locos>some of them are bought by the Black Mesa railway>the endIt gets me in the feels because not only did Mexico lose all passenger service, which was very comprehensible for latin american standards and offered poor people a cheap and safe way to travel, but also a modern and fast electric train on one of the most popular lines, that ran for just four years. It was the high water mark for Mexican passenger trains.
