Sure. A $100 Walmart BSO will be fine when it's new. Ride it every day for 3 months and it'll start falling apart because the parts that make it up are shit to start with. Then you discover that you end up spending almost as much as buying a decent bike to start with trying to keep it patched together. "A fool and his money". Guess some people just have to learn the hard way.

lmao not the op but my first road bike was what most people would consider a walmart BSO (schwinn prelude), guess what? After years of abuse and thousands of miles, its still running. Everything is factory except for the brakes and front derailleur. The wheels are as true as the first day I got them. I've moved on to more "pro" level bikes but I'm confident that the BSO that i have could last me a decade more.

Was going to make a new thread about this but this looks like a good place to post

I just got this merida that had a back wheel stolen, had a sketch shifter and was left to rust up for $ AU50. Happened to have spare back wheel that matched it, managed to fix the shifter (i dont like flight deck) and threw on a pair of gatorskins my brother gave me he had lying around for his fixie that got smashed.

DEAL OF THE CENTURY.

ALU frame and carbon fork are great and even though its sora groupset its low kilometer and does the job. Gave it a clean and good tune and its smooth and on rails. Comming from mountain bikes and single speeds i am just so impresed how effortless it rolls.

Sure thousands of dollars gets you more but this is what 50 dollars can get you if you ride and know the right people. Gonna paintstrip and polish the alu frame and it should punch way above its class.

More grip, good brakes and lights are important as well.
A comfortable saddle and decent bike fit is comfy as well and prevents joint issues and backpain.

As long as you are not racing there is no reason to go crazy on weight reduction, aerodynamics and rockhard narrow tires.
If you want to go fast outside of races, get a recumbent, it is faster and more comfy than a roadbike with aggressive geometry anyway.

I'm rebuilding one right now. I want to make a home brew electronic shifting system for it (more of an xshifter ripoff vs. Derailleur mounted servos like the sram and Shimano systems).

Gonna throw a friction shifter and a nashbar brake on it for right now.

Not really though,aluminium has a more white-silver colour while stainless(due to the chrome content) has a more grey-silver look that it shares with tungsten and titanium

Yep definitely polished alu - learn your welds ! you can see the tig welds a mile away. Alu has a bright colour and just sucks up its surroundings like a lense, Surprised more people dont do it. Just some chemical stripper goo and steel wool will get you 95% there. Buffing wheel and polish compound to go hyper bling. Tough to keep the finish though as it oxidises. There is a silcon-ceramic sealant but is expensive and only lasts a year. Clear coast of acrylic are tricky and i have never got it right so i dont try anymore. My $0.02

I have a bike with 8sp microshift shifters, they are pretty good, around 4000 km without needing a single adjust. The shifting isn't really smooth compared to the 105 my other bike has, it feels very mechanic, like you are really pulling a lever, but it works. If you want to get something cheap, buy it, it's cheap but reliable.

No way man. Paint Jobs are so prevalent today because.
1) The steels used to make bikes for the last century rust, look terrible raw and must be painted
2) Paint jobs ended up a place to project a brand logo, then with certain paintjobs becoming associated with certain brands

If you dont care for brands, perhaps built your bike up part by part and ride metallurgy with a protective oxide layer it just makes sense (and happens to be aesthetic)

Its good, it does what it says, only downsides is its pricey, you need re-apply after a year or two and the product actually has a short shelf life and needs to be kept in the freezer. I went to do another frame and it went off ! .. only got two applications and about 3 years out of a 40 dollar bottle... compared to fiddly clear coats its pretty reasonable

also like i said, even without that coating whenever i wash my bike, a good rub down with soapy steel wool and then a quick rub with silvo and paper towel makes it a mirror for a good few months sans rainstorms ;)

I normally don't rip on BSOs too much. One of my favorite mountain bikes was a K-Mart Pacific bike. It was aluminum and lighter than some good entry level bikes. The suspension wasn't great but not too squishy and no problems. The gearing was also pretty good with a super granny gear on the back cassette

The GMC Denali is a whole other pile of crap. The grip shifters in the middle are terrible for a bike with drop bars. There's a bunch of other ways to shift a road bike (The Walmart roadtech bike uses stem shifters). I have never had as much difficulty adjusting the derailleur with this versus any bike. The brakes were VERY difficult to fix because you just tighten a nut onto the cable. It is really heavy for an aluminum bike.

But in general some BSOs are perfectly good for everyday riding. That Sheldon Brown "designed for 75 miles" claim is total BS and one of many examples of him making up folklore despite being the most well-known bike expert.

I have a bso, foldable and I have used it for 8 years, not always every day, but some years I rode it 5-6 per week, around 10km round trip. It's a great no-name bike, with kinda fucked up deraileur and bent spokes, but the rides are comfy and saves me money.

It depends. You're right in that there are plenty of BSOs which are perfectly serviceable, and if you re-adjust everything when you first get it and its well maintained then they'll last for years and ride pretty nicely. The simplest BSOs are usually pretty solid, especially ones that are fully rigid and have just a 7 speed drivetrain, where there's nothing to go wrong. However, there are BSOs which are really only good for 75 miles or so. A friend of mine bought a full suspension y frame from target for like $99 on sale and the wheels were so far out of true it wobbled like mad, the steering was indexed somehow, the derailer came already bent and so it never shifted well and the rear shock crapped out at less than 100 miles

This sounds similar to my experience. There seem to be some slightly more durable looking full suspension walmart bikes now, but in general they look like deathtraps and have been recalled many times. I had a Walmart SS coaster brake cruiser bike that lasted many thousands of miles but eventually I junked it.
