Also, is Smart Yard internally developed? I was lead to believe so, but I cannot comprehend why they used fucking Java to build it. It has some nice features that make landing out cuts and blocks over SRS, but fuck if it isn't slow and makes some capabilities too difficult to use.

It was a mix, we did a lot of the preliminary design internally but the execution was poor because they ended up subcontracting a lot of the work out to third-party developers and really went with the "budget range" who don't exactly know what they're doing. I can tell you though, that CN has learnt their lesson from that BS. They're presently hiring 100+ people to work in software and we've got big projects coming.

I know you guys are working on a device to be used across the system for work reporting and all that. The goal being to be completely paperless.

They had some big wigs come down(including Claude Mongeau's super hot daughter) and ask us for input on it. They seemed really eager to actually make something with great quality and utility.

Also wanted to add that it's such a clusterfuck here. You can hardly make any changes yourself without authorization for higher levels so there's only so much work you can do. I can maybe get in 5-10 hours of work a week because of it. It's like this in software for the defence industry and other places that are overly bureaucratic. It's mind-boggling to me that a publicly traded company can operate like this. I'm looking at moving to a smaller company because of it, but just waiting for the right one to come along. Management also acts like it has a rail spike stuck up its ass 90% of the time too(but the one directly above with me is alright). A lot of the time I just chat up with my coworkers and have a lot of fun doing that. But I've completely given up with this job.

The reason companies like that end up contracting things out is because development in house takes forever due to the bureaucracy. Basically, they've strangled the company with regulations to the point that the only way to get anything done is to bypass the regulations altogether by hiring contractors, defeating any protections on code quality the regulations might have provided.
