Dude was Opinionated and was a prolific writer. Generally has knew his shit, but sometimes he'd be a dick for the sake of being a dick when expressing his disagreement. He had a particularly nasty habit of berating folks for offering anecdotes, but then turning around and offering anecdotes of his own.
And let's not forget the irony of being religiously anti-helmet, and then having his riding career ended by taking a header without a helmet and suffering brain damage.
>>1152837>meme-tier opinions like not riding with bottle cages"I just find water at mountain springs! So easy guise!"
>riding 70cm frames with barely any seatpost I mean, classic road bike sizing was "just a fistfull of post", and the dude was a giant.
>The kind of rides he did have inspired me a lot.Yeah, for whatever else I think about the dude, I admire his style of riding. I make a point of doing an epic 100-150 mile mixed dirt and pavement ride across one of his classic SF Bay Area routes at least once a year.
>>1152850>He has a single spacer above his stem. Is this woke or just a sizing issue? I've heard of doing this with carbon forks but not steelThis is a practice that pre-dates carbon steerers. Cutting the steerer a wee bit long and placing a single small spacer on top ensures that the stem is clamped entirely to the steerer; the top of the stem isn't clamped around air.
Generally you see this done with a single 2.5mm spacer. On the bike pictured, Jobst may have wanted to preserve some stem height adjustment.
>>1152850>4. WTF THAT GEARING?!>>1152865>more dumb meme shit from a bossIt's half-step gearing. It was a relatively common way to get 10 closely/evenly spaced gears out of a wide-range 5-speed freewheel (Also seen with 4-speed and 6-speed freewheels). Completely irrelevant for bikes built in the past 25+ years, but completely legit for the 6-speed Dura Ace 7400 group on that bike.
