Entry level road bikes are basically the same from any manufacturer. Buy whatever is cheapest for the given component range and that has the best paintjob

Cannondale makes the best big name entry level bike imo.
Most lesser-known bike brands will also make a decent bike at a good price point.
Giant used to have a really sweet aluminum TCR for like 1200$ but it's discontinued now.

What will drive you to say, specialized over trek, is preference and fit.

What makes the Allez the best bike for a particular person is it's a full blown road bike at an entry level price. Most entry level road bikes try to compromise and be "commuters" or "all arounders" but the allez is a legit road bike with more lightness and stiffness in mind.

I like Specialized but they're the same as any other big name brand. Their frames are made in Taiwan but so are the other big name brands and it isn't necessarily a bad thing quality wise. Manufacturing in Taiwan is pretty good these days. I will say, you are paying extra for their name. Bottom line, as long as it feels good to you at the price point and features you're looking for, that's what's important.

Their cheapest road bike is 750 euro and it hasn't full claris groupset. For that price I got a Btwin bike with 105 and UCI approved frame and their bikes are made in Europe.

If you want good and cheap bikes Decathlon is one of the best brands.

I was put off by the salesman at the Specialized store. I wondered why they kept trying to push me away from the Allez then I saw that now twice they have had to recall over 20k forks.

And that cocksucker had enough balls to tell me I can't trust carbon forks from people who sell their bikes online.

I was also put off that it was literally black friday at the end of the 2017 model year and they had zero sales.

In my experience both LBS in town that are Fuji dealers are bros. One is run by lesbians in the hipster neighborhood and one is run by beardos in the suburbs. Both totally cool. Shout out to Bicycle Shack of Lee's Summit!

No, frames are built in many european contries, at least is what I have seen on the stickers. I have seen frames from Italy, Romania and Portugal, at least the alu ones, carbon frames I don't know if they are european or they made them in Taiwan, but I suppose they are from there since best garbon factories are there.

Yeah, it's a solid bike, if not overpriced for the components you get. It has some rack mounts, so it'd definitely be a solid commuter if you wanted to be reasonably fast, and I imagine you could do some light touring with it as well.

Of course, it'll be a vast improvement. Don't get me wrong, the Allez is a fast bike. Like others were saying, the Allez is a proper race bike which is definitely an advantage, as most other road bikes at the sub $1000 range are going to be more endurance oriented.

Just buy something that fits your body and style of riding, try to find used if possible.

if the allez was a car, it'd be a miata, not a subaru. it's a road bike. not a commuter. not a offroad bike. its made for someone who wants to get into cycling as a sport, or road racing. It's one of the more lighter, twitchier, and aggressive entry level road bikes.
if you want something you can do cyclocross and light touring on, get the specialized diverge instead.

Commuting means going from point location A to location B. Any bike can be a commuting bike. if the way is paved, a road bike is fine for comuting even with 23mm tyres.

And for the cyclocross part, no, don't get a road bike and take it to offroad. A used 90's mbt with good wheels will be better.

If you want to be an ass, yes, thats the literal definition of commuter.
but "commuter" refers to something specific within the context of a bike.
You wouldnt call a lamborgini a commuter car just because technically you can commute in it. its how language works. its called context clues.
and yes, they make road bikes you can go off road on. its what i reccomended. the specialized diverge. they're gravel/adventure bikes. OP wants something to do a little of everything on, cyclocross, light touring, commuting, so that'd be the best fit.

We always talk about $100 old road bikes but when you get in the $300-$400 range you can find road bikes that were well cared for, and often look 10x better than any modern offering. The only issue it's that at the noob level you don't have the fit and mechanical knowledge not to fuck yourself buying a too small bike

It probably won't have enough tire clearance and without disk brakes or mounts for cantilever brakes u wont really be able to race any muddy cross courses. You could definitely ride on gravel roads, dry grass, and dirt with it, but cyclocross courses are deliberately brutal and the races are held in winter when everything is usually mud, so you wont be able to run wide enough tires to gain traction.

I KNOW that this is not true for steel road bikes, from riding lots of them. I just assumed it wouldn't be true of aluminium roadies either.
