Are disc rotors plausible place to shave off weight?

Currently I have some 10$ Tektro 160mms on my Rival 1 road/gg bike.

No one talks about weight differenes in rotors so I suspect there's not much differences in them?

Your brakes are the last place you want to try weight reduction, the less material used on the rotor, the less heat it can absorb.
And the less heat it can absorb, the hotter it gets during braking and you don want your lightweight rotor to desintegrate during a descent, do you?

The thinner and lighter-weight they are, the more likely they'll deform when you need to stop hard. They'll also be able to absorb less heat, and the hotter they get, the less effective they are at stopping you. Also if they get hot enough, a process called 'annealing' happens, which softens the metal, making it even easier for them to deform (think: "crumple"). You have to trust the mechanical engineers who design these things, that they know what they're doing.

Also I think you'll find that if you weigh the components of a bicycle disc braking system versus the components of a traditional rim-braking system, they're about equal.

These rotors are designed for a certain use case, if you weight 50 kg and only ride in the flats, a lightweight rotor will work just fine.
It is what it is designed for.
If you are a 80 kg+ rider riding in the mountains and descending at high speed, you are using a lightweight rotor outside of its specifications.
It will start to fade, glow, soften and eventualy fail catastrophicly.

Also: the weight differences between lightweight rotors and normal rotors will not make you noticeably slower anyway.

Carbon fiber reinforced epoxy = CFK
Carbon fiber reinforced carbon = CFC

CFK softens significantly under temperatures greater than about 70°C (exakt temperature depends on resin)

CFC doesn't realy soften under high temperature.

You're a dumbass. No one uses those abbreviations however CFC would stand for carbon fibre composite, which would be a polymer/plastic reinforced with carbon fibre. The plastic resin would be the epoxy. They'd all make shitty brake rotors.

What you instead want is SiCCC which is what Kettle rotors use (similar shit to what's used in high end car rotors), Silicon Carbide-Ceramic-Carbon.

It's beautiful. Weight weenie stuff is amazing. Once I made a spreadsheet that calculated g shaved per $ of each upgrade. Veloplugs, full carbon fork (vs alu steerer) and some other silly things came out wayyyy ahead for value. Remember this when you see a guy with lightweight bling who isn't smart enough to go to Ti bolts first

No it's not okay to go mechanical unless you really can't afford hydro's. On anything that doesn't need brifters or STI's there's no reason not to go hydro.

any rotor thats stainless steel - they are indestructible. rotor wear is a meme. been riding my unique magura rotor / shimano saint hydro setup for 10 years now and the rotor wear is minimal.

never. mech disc is literally kmart tier. cables stretch and ruin braking performance. Hydralic fluid is in-compressible. Disc dont make discs good. Hydraulics do: see hydraulic rim brakes like magura.

If you run a full length housing then yeah compression will be minimised, otherwise you have flex at the housing stops and even in the frame.

However that increases friction even more, the rear brake usually has the most friction and a full length housing only adds to that. You'll end up with a half decent front brake and a terrible rear one and you'll need to learn and adjust to modulating both differently.

Also cable levers and calipers tend to have more flex that hydraulic versions, you'll need to spend more money to minimise that and by that point you'll be approaching (or maybe even exceeding) the cost of hydros.

A Shimano M315 is like 20-25 euros.

Not really something you'd want when riding through the mountains, but good enough for any commuter.
Hydros can be had for cheap enough.
