I dont know much about early 20th innovations, but why did interurbans and trolleys come BEFORE busses? Seems like it was way more work to put tracks down, electrical crosswires, and poles, and basically lock the streetcars to permanent routes.
why not just create a longbody car?

Because streetcars were an evolution of horse drawn tracked carriages, the very first form of public transport. Therefore by the time electric motors came around there was already a network of tracks in large cities, and at the time combustion engines were still too loud, too noisy and too dirty for reliable urban operation. They would've faced a similarly short life as steam trams.

I'm sorry, I mean too unreliable, too noisy and too dirty. There's a reason why as late as the '60s cars still only had five digit odometers for their lifetime mileage.

Fuel quality was a lottery. Hesselman engines saw some popularity in letting people use slightly cheaper oils in what was a crossbreed between a gasoline and diesel engine.
Electricity could be produced from anything and with much bigger functional margins if combustion was involved.
