Beginner to biking and would like a bike that I can use on mainly paved trails. I have my eyes set on Raleigh's Cadent 3 & 4. They seem very similar and I was wondering if it'd be worth spending the extra $$$ on the Cadent 4. Would like some insight, please.

I was going to say they both look over priced, but the prices you mentioned look reasonable. With a difference of only 50$ I'd go for the 4.

A quick look at the specs it looks like the difference is in the derailures and brakes. I can't quote any first hand experince with any of those components, but usually the more expensive option will be more mechanically robust and require slightly less maintenance.

The Cadent 4 is a 1x, meaning you'll only have one shifter/derailure to worry about.

OP if you aren't trolling, don't fucking buy this unless you have a back problem. It's ugly and not desirable. For basic fucking you do not need hydraulic disc brakes. Either get a cheap used bike, or get a better new bike, like a drop bar adventure bike, or something like a Giant

OP here. I am using the corporate website that gives discounts to employees, which my friend is one.
So, I am just curious. It seems the only difference between the two is obviously color, and the 4 has SRAM Apex Trigger 11spd and the 3 has Shimano Claris 8 Speed

i'm pretty torn. and not convinced the cadent 4 is any better >>1157060

$50 extra is fuck all and 1x11 is much better than 2x8 if you don't need that extra bit at the top end (the 4 has more than enough gearing for flat ground, you just won't be going much faster than about 25mph down hill unless you tuck).

More hand positions are nice to have for longer rides. I don't like riding for any serious amount of time on the road with flat bars.

While it is possible to aero tuck on flatbars i wouldn't want to ride like that for any signficant distance.

Riding on the the brake hoods lets me feel more stretched out on the bike, which at least I appreciate.

The differences:

Claris 8x3 vs SRAM 11X1.

Promax vs Tektro low end hydrualics.

Slightly better wheelset.

Usually, for a shitheap hybrid, the whole point is to go cheap. But here, I think the extra money is absolutely worth it. Promax doesn't have a good rep, and Apex about the same tier as Tiagra, a full two tiers higher than claris.

It's a more than reasonable entry level choice. It's a short range runabout kind of bike. You can slap on barends, but don't expect it be a full on roadie bike.

Also, the saddle is terrible. Expect to replace it with something more suitable for whatever your riding position is.

The tiers vary from year to year. Apex is SRAM's entry level road. 11 speed vs 11 speed.
