I had some when i was like nine, they were lots of fun, not very practical for anything really but whatever. Consider wearing a helmet and atleast elbow and palm protection when using them tho.

Pros: Awesome exercise and fun as hell on smooth pavement. Relatively easy to work on as the only thing you'll ever really need to replace are ball bearings and wheels. If you can learn to do stunts you'll impress adults and children alike.

Cons: Cannot be put on or taken off quickly. Cannot be used on all surfaces. Little pebbles can become lodged in them while riding and cause you to fall. You'll look like a total dork wearing a helmet and pads. If you screw up any stunts you risk being laughed at and made fun of by children and adults alike.

Despite all the cons, I love my roller blades. Fuck yeah, you should get some.

Adding to this...I never wore protective gear from the start, but I started rollerblading 24 years ago (damn, I'm getting old) when that kind of attire wasn't enforced or encouraged. I've been lucky enough to have never sustained any serious injuries, but there's been plenty of road rash and bruises that have kept me off my blades for a week at a time.

Would place you higher off the ground if mounted underneath the shoe, therefore more strain on ankles, theoretically more inertia to overcome even with fewer wheels. Rollerskis are pretty similar to what you're thinking of.

They seem to be able to go quite fast but having to take them on and off for commuting seems impractical. Riding a pro scooter seems like a better option.

What's your budget? How far are you looking to ride? How's your balance? I've been skating regularly for over (holy shit) 9 years at this point. I ride almost every day. They are a great inbetweener transit, but not nearly as useful as you would think for multiterrain commute in urban areas.
