I'm trying to figure out transportation for myself.

I'm trying to figure out transportation for myself. Mostly just to get to work, get groceries, have fun, and probably go camping. Its feeling like my options are

- Get a loan to get a $6k car
- Use my tax return to buy a car with cash
- Get a cheap bicycle from Good Will and convert it into an electric moped with a mid-drive or treadmill motor
- Get scammed on Alibaba for a CocoCity

I was curious to see if anyone had any suggestions that aren't on the list, or if theres any option on this list thats better than the others.

3 miles for work, roughly the same for groceries. As for the other stuff theres a campground 20 miles from me, and two others about 80 miles from me. Realistically I can probably rent a car or something for anything beyond 40 miles.

Getting a loan for a car is among the dumbest financial choices you can make. If you commute is only 3 miles you can easily bike that. 20 and 80 miles are both still within bikeable distance and you can go camping with your bike.

Leave for work early and get there before rush hour starts, it'll impress your boss. If its shift work then just fuck around near the building for a bit, bring a book. Its so much easier getting around early in the morning before the rush its not worth it to wait. Get a solid bike and know how to handle it well so you can be confident. Practice riding on the road before you start commuting all the time, its not a big deal though, you'll be fine. Get good lights and wear bright clothes. Always take the lane if its too narrow for cars to pass safely (i.e. at least 3 feet away)

If you can handle rush hour in your area then go for it, bikes are usually as fast or faster than cars when the traffic is bad. I usually go into work about half an hour early and get caught up with email. Gives me an excuse to leave a bit early too, but doesn't sound possible with your job. Doing God's work building military gear, so kudos for that

I went to the local bike shop. The guy convinced me to make a ~$500 budget, and to research 27.5 inch rims then come back on Saturday. Honestly, I dropped $300 on a Swagtron Scooter so. Not the worst idea. Although that budget I'm hoping is both bike and e-bike kit before accessories.

I'd recommend getting comfortable riding a bike around on the road before moving to a motorcycle, just because the mental adjustment to being exposed to cars takes time and its best to have a less immediate transition into it. Motorcycles are actually safer imo than bicycles in traffic if you drive safely and don't do stupid shit, since motorcycles can match traffic speed and you have enough power to gtfo if something starts looking sketchy

modern mtbs are being sold with 27.5 but there's no reason for it, 26" mtbs are still fine. for road wheels, 700c is still the standard, but some rando fags are pushing for 27.5 as well, although they call it 650b. For camping on a bike just use a tent and a sleeping bag, cycle touring is pretty big there's tons of info on how to do it. Same with motorcycle touring. A motorcycle is complete overkill for your needs, but sometimes overkill can be fun

The bafang midrives kits are nice, but for three miles? No it's overkill. Also ebikes aren't really cost effective compared to gas mopeds yet. The only reason to get an ebike kit over a moped is if you already own the bike and like the aftermarket and customization options that bicycles offer or if they exploit some legal loophole (my case).

Screw it. Getting a minivan. Kept looking for used bikes and they're all fucksville distances away for any deals, and shipping ends up making it all out to be the same price as buying a new cheapo from the shops. Everything here is way further than I had previously thought.

Slightly more serious I'm considering just getting a shitty $500 hub motor e-bike. Worst case scenario I buy a better bike and transfer the tech. Most of the shit in my range is like 36v and 500 watts, which is twice the power the shop was selling me.

Why though? Pedaling isn't hard unless you're a fatfuck or handicapped. Riding 3 miles at 15mph takes about 90 calories, which is like 1 piece of fruit. It'll take you 12 minutes, round up to 15 to include locking your bike up

I also like the thought of being able to go a 40 mile distance. Also generally just tech geekery. I had an electric scooter and the instant acceleration was awesome up until the point where it broke.

Well, after walking for a few days, I've remembered how easy it is to just ... not use a motor.

Now my issue is working with the bike store owner. He had some nice sub-500 stuff. Guy is gonna try to sell me a 27.5 inch wheel bike and everything I find online looks to still be 26.

It really doesn't matter much if at all. Typically road bikes are 700c, mtbs are either 26", 27.5" or 29" (which is pretty much 700c). Some new road bikes designed for wide tires are using 650b, which is basically 27.5". There's really no noticable difference between 26" and 27.5" for mtbs. For the new genre of road bikes with larger tires, 650b is really nice for tire choice but a bit pricer. Again, unless you're super into riding it really just doesn't matter.

A good entry level commuter would be somthing like a trek fx or a kona dew or whatever, every major bike brand has one and they're all the same essentially. Don't buy a mtb for commuting, that's kinda silly, unless you go full 90s rigid mountain meme. Cheap road bikes or hybrids make good commuters. Buying used is almost always a better deal, either from a bike shop with a used inventory or craigslist. However, for around $400-500 you can get a solid new bike.

Can't remember. Brands I don't recognize, so thats a good thing since anything I would recognize is department store. Might have had been Trek and something Japanese and some third one. Sadly the store doesn't do used, but they have some old stock thats on clearance.

Probably Marin bolinas ridge, Breezer uptown, not sure on the Fuji or the Schwinn.

I'll probably nab the Fuji then. I don't remember if it had gears, but it was the same price as the Marin and brand new and a design I like better. The Marin's sale price was $600. They're both $300 now. Would it be better to consider the Marin, or is this one of those situations where money make no sense?
