What's your opinion on using a kickstand?

I'd like to install one, but it makes the bike uglier

Protip for parking your bike, strap the front wheel to the downtube and then it's easy to lean and will never fall over.

That's not a protip at all. Kickstands aren't for preventing the bike from falling over when leaned against something, kickstands are for parking the bike when there's nothing to lean it against to begin with.

bike is meant to be practical
these stands are useful for just not having to lean the bike on the floor, however there are more appropriate symmetrical stands for bikes like the ones for motorcycles, and better for use with heavily equipped rigs.

Kickstands are great if you don't mind the extra weight. Let the peasants lay their bikes down in the dirt or run about trying to look for something to lean it against while you majestically kick down your kickstand and park your bike wherever you want.

Whenever I'm not riding my bike, it's locked against a pole, so I have no use for one. I imagine they'd be pretty useful for touring though, but then you'd need a very sturdy one.

I haven't had a bike with a kickstand since god knows when but kicking out the stand then dismounting feels balla as fuck. Center stand is ok and looks better while dismounted but you can't really kick it out while mounted so it doesn't feel as badass. A rear axle mounted kickstand is garbage tier though

I will say though after all that, kick stands are lower than beginner tier bike lean and quite unnecessary considering there are more advanced level bike lean techniques.

No point. Either you're locking your bike up, and won't need the stand or, if it's a 'hanging around in a buddy's driveway' scenario, there's something fine to lean your bike up against.

Useless part with the one exception of touring/having a bunch of shit on there.

Dunno, I find that a heavily loaded touring bike is more likely to find a way to fall over anyway. The double leg ones like >>1161038 are pretty good if you have an actual kickstand plate.

Hair tie. Just as easy as a rubber band, won't degrade under UV and fall apart after a few weeks.

No it isn't. You rely on brakes you bring you to a stop. Brakes are perfectly capable of keeping a bike stopped, loaded or not. It is extremely easy to lock up the wheel of a bike not in motion using normal bicycle brakes.

also neat is to disengage it all you have to do is give your bike a firm push forward and it clicks back into stored position. also, unlike a kickstand, the flickstand will keep your bike steady when you're loading front panniers which is especially handy for a loaded touring bike. the only disadvantage, of course, being that it's incompatible with fenders.

Kickstands in the center of the the bike are never as stable as a decent kickstand at the back.
This is the best option if you want to use panniers, because your bike is supported where the rack sits.

A framelock is convenient for this. Won't actually hold the bike up of course, but it stabilizes it almost like the flickstand. Also lightly secures it.

Looks like a hitch for a trailer

improvised chainstay protector from a tire

Where I come from, every leaning space or bike rack is typically taken by hundreds of other bikes so kick stands are the optimal way to secure your bike without interfering with others or taking too much space.
