What gear ratio would you choose for 1x GG bike?

Many come with 11-42t cassette with 42t chainring. That feels bit overkill and giant cogs look dumb.

Any suggestions? Does anyone use 40t with 11-36t cassatte?

I have really strong legs so I can keep that in mind.

40/36 gives you about 30 inches, to put that in perspective a 34/28 ratio on a compact road double gives you 32. I don’t know what purpose gearing below 30 inches serves, but keep in mind the only riding I do off the road is crashing my mtb a bunch a few weekends every summer

Depends on the kind of riding you're doing I guess. Just bear in mind that when you run out of gears on a road bike you can stand but standing on a steep gravel climb is often not an option because you'll just lose traction.

My gravel bike has a 20 inch low and i use it.

id just do a 11-42t for a gravel. you have more options and unless you're a strava nerd, it's only going to help, especially given the much higher resistance with bigger tires and going off road

cool, then shift up. just because you have a 42t doesnt mean you need to use it 24/7. 11-36t is kinda stupid unless you're using it to compete in something like crits

Depending on the terrain, it’s almost a necessity! I don’t use much below 32” on pavement, but my fire road explorer has a 22” low gear. My bikepacking rig has a 20” low gear.

My road bike has 44 + 11/36
My gravel has 39/26 + 11/28
My XC bike has 35/21 + 11-28
My Enduro has 36 + 11-50

The general rule of a thumb is that at your usual speed you should use the middle of the cassette.

Do you even use Sheldon's great calculator? Figure out what gear inches you use on your 2x and see if a 1x can give you the same high and low gears that you need

Don't forget that it is a meme and mostly best for CX, urban commuting, and meme mtb disciplines

I ride my track bike in tracklandia, and I know it was irrelevant. IMO OP should go for something around 40-50 gear inches for relatively flat trails, but for stuff with climbs drop it to 35.

How fast are you really going on rough gravel roads with knobbly tires and what kind of hills do you need to climb? Pick something in between that with a little emphasis on climbing gear. Like others have said you should be in the middle of the cassette under normal conditions with a 1x.

Keep in mind 38x11 is still good for almost 50km/h.

I would never pick 1x for an all purpose bike, which is what gravel grinders tend to be.

1x is for flat time trial bikes on road, CX if preferable for your local races, or DH/enduro.

I would spec 2x is for other CX, road race, rolling TTs and XC race.

And 3x for a solo/group riding/training road bike, XC bike, touring bike, or gravel grinder, because fuck changing out cassettes and chainrings and bad days.

Having a 1:1 ratio (or even better) is not dumb at all unless you like to walk up gravel roads but then your spread is atrocious for keeping a decent cadence.

My lowest gear on a 650b bike (which makes it a bit easier to push compared to 700) is 34:32, and it's not bad. Definitely thinking about upgrading the 11 speed ultegra 11-34 in the future.

Keep in mind on loose stuff you're likely to lose traction climbing out of the saddle so you need to be able to really push that low gear when you get stupid shit like 10/15/20%.

A rider can not run a cadence as high as he does with short cranks with long cranks.

Also: comparing gear inches amongst riders is a verry bad metric of strength as well, since some ride at 70 rpm, while others utilise higher cadences such as 120-140.

If you seriously want to do that, I suggest having your gears spaced in a simmilar way as shimanos "mega range", basicly a medium cassette except for the largest sproket, that one is significantly larger.
