Ironically all the dead ends cause all the more traffic on all roads that aren't cul-de-sacs, and more traffic overall, so unless you actually live in one of those dead ends you've realistically made it worse with your shitty spaghetti design.

Modern suburbs are designed that way for several reasons:
1. minimizes traffic on residential streets
2. slows traffic on residential streets
3. prevents through traffic and short-cutting
4. discourages non-residents from entering the neighborhood

Ironically the effect is the opposite in the first two regards. The more mangled up the layout the further you have to drive to get out of it, and the further you have to drive to get out of it (alongside generally making residential streets too wide, removing the sense of speed from drivers) the more you will go an excessive speed.

So really the residents force themselves to drive more and speed more in their own neighborhood just to keep the phantom of the through-traffic out. These neighborhoods are complete fucking cancer.

See that's where US term for "divided highway" ends.
The meaning of dual carriageway applies to say median barrier-separated avenues and boulevards as well, not just those expressways with clear strips of land as central reservation.
Narrow those >>1163573 openings for emergency vehicles only and ban crossing movements, and you keep those junctions as pairs of T intersections. This address (unnecessarily) junction spacing on a main road >>1163603 while preserving connectivity, but it applies more in an urban context with lots of side streets and high traffic volume. For such a local collector in this neighborhood I don't see any problem.

This is the queue for a bus connecting Huntingdale train station (in the background) to Monash University. There isn't a train to the uni as you might expect, and buses are the only public transport link for the foreseeable future. Obviously there is the demand for a rail service.

Sorry for all these quotes,but what would be a _good_ design?
Rate pic related.
Red - main road with heavy traffic;
Orange - side road with regulated traffic (parking spots, lower speed limit, one lane, bike lanes etc);
Blue - driveway, usually a connection between properties (blocs) and roads, minimal traffic, car parking zones, not all blocs connected as the thru traffic ways are usually closed off (you're supposed to leave the car closer to the road and walk that couple of metres).
Yes it is post-soviet design cancered up with more cars than it was supposed to handle.

In soviet high-rise neighbourhoods like this, these red blocks aren't bigger than 1km in each direction afaik (looks less than 500m in your pic). You don't have to follow a long maze before getting onto a main street unlike in >>1163198

On the downside, these ineede weren't designed for everyone or even every family having a car so now all those blue inner streets and yards are pretty clogged up with parked cars.

You already have one man remote control switching jobs. Railroads are very highly automated already. I see ECP braking finally taking hold sometime as the biggest change in freight technology.

I doubt you'll have completely automated trains anytime soon. There are too many issues that can happen. Just the other day I saw the PTC give an erroneous enforcement and the train caught a knuckle. I know of another incident that had occurred within the last month. Removing that person doesn't provide that much costs savings or even efficiency gains.
