Luas is a tram system, i.e. not a subway.

Luas has 2 lines, uses Alstom Citadis trams as rolling stock and uses the Leap Card fare system. Also Luas is Irish for "swift".

There is the DART, or Dublin Area Rapid Transit, but that's a light rail system sharing the same rails with long distance heavy rail intercity and commuter systems as well as the train to Northern Ireland.

DART Underground was cancelled, and Metro North was also cancelled.

Northern Ireland is getting BRT, and that's like insult to injury.

Subways are fucking gay. Unless it's a asian-style bigass commuter-train-sized subway with stations 1-2km away, it'll be barely faster than a good tram system, plus you lose a lot of time entering and exiting the stations, and changing lines, so if your trip isn't too far you won't even be faster than you would with a fast tram (or bus). Only some older subways have lines right below ground, and not even all of them. Most recent subways are built quite deep. Some stations in my city I've measured the time it takes to get from the platform to the street, in one station I counted about 3 minutes if I got lucky with the elevator, if I took the escalators (and walk up the escalators) it took me about 5 minutes.
Also it's so fucking boring to ride the subway, because you don't see anything. You don't get to know your city like you do with surface transportation. I'd rather take 5 minutes longer to get places if I can at least see out the window. 30 minutes with a view go by faster than 25 in a tunnel.

Seriously? Is it just the line to Swords/Dublin Airport? I know they're building a branch line from the Belfast-Dublin Mainline to Dublin Airport, but that's mostly for passengers to get from the airport to Dublin City Centre, and for passengers from Northern Ireland to get there.

Pro: Goes just about anywhere in the city, fairly reliable. (Trains running late does happen but not as much as people like to complain about it in all honesty)
Cons: Fares keep getting more expensive, up to the point where I rarely use it anymore since I can't get my cheap ticket since I left HS anymore. Other from the usual subway discommodities like homeless people and all that I can't really think of anything. It's a pretty good system.

Pro: You canget anywhere in the city quite fast, its relatively reliable. Trains are quite modern.
Cons: Fares are expensive. They fucked up when they upgraded tramlines to subways in the 1960s and 1970s and stopped halfways when they ran out of money with the plan to continiue at some point that never came. So we are stuck with this half subway, half lightrail mess. Many stations are filthy and there are too many homeless.

Pros: Runs pretty reliably, not a lot of delays, on the more central lines trains pretty much come within 5 minutes, although on some of the other ones it can at the worst be around 15 minutes per train. It's also quite affordable as a student, and the student ticket also includes buses, trams, some trains and ferries to islands in the fjord.
Cons: I wish it reached more of the city centre, but the city is fairly small so it's usually not a big problem, especially since the tram and bus network is pretty decent. Overall I'm quite pleased.

Is it really that bad? Aside from the U5, all other lines are segregated from street traffic with at least level crossings. They run 100 meter-trains regularly, which is full-subway tier.
And unlike certain Rhine-Ruhr light rail networks, it is entirely seperated from the lowfloor tram network.

I actually use it quite rarely, it's more convenient for me to use tram, since I live quite close to the centre.
The biggest disadvantage is that the stations are quite deep, so it takes some time to get to the platform, and than going back to the surface.

Just two lines for a city this big means it's near-useless unless you live close to a station (I don't). Also it's a surprising pain in the ass finding a map of just the subway (it's the blue and orange lines).
However, the rest of SEPTA's network complements it well enough.

Pros: Connects the closest relevant suburbs to the city (Fortitude Valley, Toowong, Southbank etc) and connection to the Gold Coast and Airport

Cons: No routes to major hubs like Chermside, Universities and the further out you go the less relevant the suburbs you pass through get unless you're on the Gold Coast line I guess

That's what you get when the public transit system is essentially run by blacks, for blacks. It's run poorly, it ends up servicing only "those" neighborhoods, and the fact that it is poorly run and only services "those" parts of town means that the rest of the taxpayers will never be willing to spend the money to make it not suck.

Hmmm. There are a few theaters around Willy-Brandt-Platz station (U-Bahn and Tram). There is the metropolitain opera and theater complex and also the Engllish theater, which is the best english langlauge theater in continental Europe. THere is also the Maintower nearby, a large Skyscraper with an observation platform on top that gives you a nice overview over the city.
Then there is Alt-Sachsenhausen, which is the pub distric with its bars and typical Frankfurt style cider pubs. You can access it by tram at the stop Frankensteiner Platz or by S-Bahn and tram at Lokalbahnhof.
There is the Batschkapp which is a great live music hall, its in the east of the city in an industrieal area, but easily accessable with the U-Bahn at the station Gwinnerstraße.
Is that the kind of stuff you are looking for.

We have no Subway system and our city population is past San Diego levels already
Our public system is comprised of 30+ year old refurbished buses from California, and we pay double what the Mexican capital (LA population levels) pays for their metro and bus services.
I envy cities with actual public transport systems.~
Only pro is you can tag the buses and no one cares, not even the cops.

The Eckenheimer is the highstreet of that part of the Nordend. You can´t just close it off, but yes. Its infuriating. I live in that area and the streetrunning part is the worst. Exspecially since they cemented it for decades now with the new platforms at Musterschule and Glauburgstraße. Perfect would be a tunnel from the Anlagenring to at least the Hauptfriedhof, at best to past Gießerner Straße.

Donostia-San Sebastian's cross-border narrow-gauge railway line, AKA the "Topo". Closest thing to a metro around these parts, I suppose.

Pros: fast, reliable, modern trains, only rail line that works with local smart card, 15-minute interval between trains
Cons: tiny, cramped trains (this is technically a suburban train line but holy shit subway-style vertical seating would have been a blessing, especially on the rush hour or after a football match), the local government insists on calling it a metro when it really isn't, one of the stations (Intxaurrondo) is deep as fuck so you either have to ride some neverending escalators or hope you get off the train on time to ride the elevator, which kinda sucks if you're in a wheelchair.

Overall it's pretty decent, wouldn't really change it for anything else.

Rode it from Irun to San Sebastian, then from San Sebastian to Bilbao. To me it is a textbook case of how a local authority can fill in the gapes where national railway companies don't even bother trying. The basque community took it on a few years ago and turned an abandonned and looked upon line into a succesful and efficient mean of transportation. I wish our regions in France had the same power and will to do the same and save small lines that do have potential but are just not seen as interesting by the SNCF.

But yeah, public transportation is pretty reliable around these parts, surprisingly enough. Head up to France and not only do the suburban buses take a break in the evening, they all end around 8pm. With that being said, SNCF is miles beyond Renfe in terms of service (and in train variety if you're as austistic as I am), you may have the weirdest timetable but fuck me would I rather ride the TER than our Cercanias.

We're bike touring from country to country, but I think most city transit will be up in the air, so if the Batschkapp has stuff going, we'll probably head out that way.
