29yo male, 6 feet, 180lbs

I want to get into biking. I've rented a few times, but don't own a bike.

I'd like to spend less than a thousand dollars. I plan on using it mostly on paved city trails (we have hundreds of miles of paved trails).

What are your recommendations?

Also drop bars are a meme, especially in the city. OP, get a Marin Muirwoods, convert it to 1x9, put Mary bars on it (or similar) and you have an excellent bike for leisure rides.

find something used, maybe try a pawn shop, spend a little now and ride it for the summer and into the fall. At this point you are actually interested in cycling and its ok to spend a little cash, by this time you will have figured out what YOU want. At this point its ok to spend some cash. If at the end of the fall and into winter you only rode the bike 5 times then you save your money for something you are actually interested in... too many people buying $1k bikes riding them twice then selling them 3 years later when they need more space in their garage.

If OP wants drop bars, I would potentially agree with you. An old 1970s-1990s road bike from Craigslist would be a good option, and it would only cost $100-$300 (expect another $100+ for parts and labor to fix it up).
If OP wants flat bars... depends. If he's only going to be riding under like 14 miles, then a 90s rigid mountain bike with semislicks would be good. If OP wants flat bars and intends to do rides longer than that, I'd be inclined to get a new flat bar hybrid.

OP, if you get a hybrid, DO NOT get one with suspension. Suspension on hybrids is literally the most retarded thing any human has ever invented and the people that thought it was a good idea should be in prison for life for being fucking retards.
Also, there is a difference between a hybrid and a cruiser/comfort bike. Hybrids are great. 'Comfort bikes' are absolute garbage, and a fuck of a lot of people falsely refer to them as hybrids.

I'd get a flat bar road bike, look for an aluminum frame and carbon fork. You'll get a lightweight bike with road bike geometry so you can still be very fast on the road. Next option is a hybrid but it won't be as fast as a fbrb because hybrid geometrys are more upright so wind resistance gonna fuck ya. Also yes drop bars are a meme, flat bars are infinitely more comfortable and intuitive.

Drop bars are good for one thing, going fast in a straight line, and even there they're outclassed by TT bars. They are still in use only because UCI and muh tradition.

wide drops are a thing, kiddo. 625mm across at the tips of the drops.

Shifter/derailleur compatibility issues between dropbar levers and MTB gearing aside, drops are a hell of a lot of fun off road.

I have a slightly swept flat bar on my "real" mountain bike, but that goes 30 miles at a time, tops. This bike goes all day long over everything from pavement to rough singletrack, and no wrist, hand, or back pain from being stuck in one position all day.

You can get the same functionality with an altbar with 4 times cheaper shift/brake components, no useless hoods and fuck ugly high rise stems. Face it, the only advantage of dirt drops is the snowflake factor.
